It is currently peak tourist season here, many lucky tourists get to see this sight.

At 7am on June 24, Chau Thanh Tin (25 years old), a local tour guide, and a group of tourists saw whales swimming in the Hon Rua island area. The sea water here is clear, making it easy to see the whales' activities.

He said: "This is the first time I have seen a whale of such a large size, it seems to be an old humpback whale. At this time, there is a south wind, the weather is cool and pleasant. Schools of anchovies, the whale's favorite food, drift to the sea. The whale also swims to this area to hunt."

That day, Mr. Tin also saw the whale continuing to swim around the Hon Rua area. Every 3-5 minutes, the whale would surface to breathe once.

Lam Chau Thong (25 years old), another local guide, revealed that every year in the 5th and 6th lunar months, whales come to hunt. However, locals cannot know exactly when the whales will appear.

"In the past, I often went fishing and often encountered whales, which the locals often call "whale sirens". When we went fishing, we often used a detector and whenever we saw an area with anchovies, we would have a chance to see whales. However, the locals cast nets, and if they caught a whale, they would immediately release it," he revealed.

Ms. Le Anh Thu (24 years old, Ninh Thuan ) had a 2-day-1-night trip to Vinh Hy with a group of 8 friends. On June 24, the group rented a boat to visit Hon Rua Island and accidentally saw whales hunting there. Her group saw whales twice: the first time at Yen Cave going to Hon Rua at 11am, and the second time going back at 1:30pm.

She said she did not realize at first that it was a rare whale, and only when the canoe driver reminded her did she quickly take out her phone to film it. The first time she saw a whale in real life, she could not believe her eyes, she felt overwhelmed.

"I didn't believe I could see whales in real life. I felt extremely lucky. Returning to the mainland and seeing them up close again made me and my friends feel grateful to see whales again. We are still very emotional," the female tourist shared.

As a native of Phan Rang, she believes that meeting a whale not only brings luck to herself but also good luck to the entire fishing community.

In the coastal area of Ninh Thuan, whale worship is an indispensable part of fishermen's lives.

At the end of May 2025, a whale nearly 4 meters long and weighing about 1 ton drifted into Ninh Chu estuary (Tri Hai commune, Ninh Hai, Ninh Thuan). Although fishermen tried to pull it back to sea, the whale still drifted ashore, became stranded and died.

Locals salvaged the whale's body and held a burial ceremony according to local customs. According to folk beliefs, whenever a whale washes ashore, fishermen will have a good harvest, smooth sailing, and no accidents at sea.
