A 43-year-old patient, residing in Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province, was admitted to the hospital with lower abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine and urinary disorders. Through clinical examination and imaging results, the doctor diagnosed the patient with a stone measuring about 3x3cm in size in the bladder. However, what is worrying is that during the surgery, the doctors discovered that this stone was precipitated from the nucleus of an IUD that had penetrated the uterine wall. The patient had had an IUD for 15 years.
Doctors recommend that IUDs are a popular method of contraception, but they are not absolutely safe if not monitored regularly. Subjectivity in not returning for check-ups can lead to displacement of the IUD, perforation of the uterus, straying and causing damage to surrounding organs, and even dangerous complications if not detected and treated promptly.
