Vision Pro new version coming soon?

Apple is about to launch an upgraded Vision Pro with an M4 chip and new straps to increase competitiveness as many competitors in the industry continue to gain market share.

Since its launch, the Vision Pro has played a key role in Apple’s wearables strategy, and the upcoming upgrade will not only address technical shortcomings but also help the company maintain its presence in the market while waiting for the next generation to be completed.

In the long term, the company has made no secret of its ambition to dominate the smart glasses segment, especially AR glasses that allow data and images to be overlaid on the real world without the need for a see-through camera. However, this is a huge technical challenge that requires a long development time and resources.

While competitors are constantly accelerating, Apple chooses to go slow, steady and follow its own path. This is in line with the company's product philosophy: not launching before the technology is truly ready and the user experience is guaranteed.

Performance upgrade

Apple is preparing to launch the first upgrade for Vision Pro. According to Bloomberg , the new version will focus on improving processing performance and comfort when using, in the context that Vision Pro has not created strong attraction with consumers.

Specifically, the new generation Vision Pro will be equipped with the M4 chip, the processor line that is currently appearing on the latest iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and iMac models. This is a big step up from the current M2 chip, which was launched in 2022. In addition, Apple is also testing expanding the number of Neural Engine cores, an important part of AI tasks.

One of the biggest weaknesses of Vision Pro is that it is uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. The device weighs about 600g, making users susceptible to neck fatigue and headaches.

To address this issue, Apple is developing a new strap that will better distribute weight, reducing pressure on the back of the neck and the top of the head. The company is also working on an optional strap design that will allow for more flexibility depending on the time and situation of use.

According to the technology community, this upgrade is a "refresh", meaning it keeps the overall design the same but improves performance and comfort to maintain the competitiveness of Vision Pro in the next few years. This could be an important stepping stone to help the device gain a clearer foothold in the enterprise segment, where factors such as AI processing and stability are prioritized.

Adjust strategy

In parallel with the Vision Pro upgrade, Apple is outlining its long-term plans in the wearables field. According to Bloomberg , the company aims to launch a completely new second-generation version in 2027. This model of glasses is said to have a lighter design, using new materials to reduce weight while maintaining performance and visual experience.

Apple is also working on a simple pair of smart glasses that don’t include virtual reality or augmented reality, with a launch date of 2026 at the earliest.

The device will focus on basic functions such as voice assistant, video recording or calling, similar to the Ray-Ban line developed by Meta. This is considered a “universal” approach to wearable devices, preparing for the birth of real AR glasses by the end of this decade.

The move comes as Apple faces growing competition from rivals like Meta and Samsung. Facebook’s parent company is developing a high-end AR headset codenamed Orion, which is expected to launch in 2027. Meanwhile, Samsung is likely to launch its Moohan mixed reality headset later this year, with a better price tag than the Vision Pro.

On the software side, Apple will also release visionOS 26 in the second half of this year, which will include features like eye control, virtual widgets, and expanded support for third-party apps. This is expected to be an ecosystem booster for Vision Pro, which has struggled due to a lack of compelling and exclusive apps.
