Colonel Nguyen Dang Chien, Head of the Propaganda Department of the Engineering Corps, said that Brigade 249 (under the Engineering Corps) operated a military ferry on the afternoon of June 30 to measure the water level in the Phong Chau bridge area, in order to have a plan to ensure traffic across the Red River (the area where the Phong Chau bridge collapsed).
Previously, on June 21, due to rising flood waters, Brigade 249 had to cut the emergency bridge and regularly monitor water levels and test the ferry without a load.
After checking the water level and current, Brigade 249 said it is qualified to operate the military ferry daily to serve the people. From tomorrow, July 1, from 6am to 8pm every day, the military ferry will operate to serve the people. After 8pm every day, the military force will maintain the tractor and ferry.
At the end of September 2024, the Phong Chau pontoon bridge was installed by Brigade 249 to serve the people of Phu Tho and neighboring areas across the Red River after the Phong Chau bridge collapsed. Every day, the pontoon bridge carries thousands of people across the river.
As reported by SGGP, a week ago, when the North had heavy rain for many days, the amount of water flowing from upstream caused a large flow rate, making it impossible to operate the pontoon bridge. Brigade 249 temporarily closed the bridge and switched to using military ferries to transport people across the Red River.
