The Vietnam Cai Luong Theatre, the Vietnam Cheo Theatre and the Vietnam Tuong Theatre will merge into the Vietnam National Traditional Theatre, to be completed before August 1. The theatre leaders affirmed that this will help the management apparatus become streamlined, strong and open up new opportunities for traditional theatre.
No worries about losing shows
According to Decision No. 1270/QD-TTg dated June 24, 2025, the Vietnam Cai Luong Theatre, the Vietnam Cheo Theatre and the Vietnam Tuong Theatre will merge into the Vietnam National Traditional Stage Theatre, to be completed before August 1.
People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong - Director of Vietnam Cheo Theater - affirmed that the merger will develop traditional arts, creating a streamlined and strong apparatus.

"For thousands of years, tuong and cheo have always gone hand in hand. Traditional arts have always gone hand in hand, but each has its own place in the hearts of the audience. The merger is meant to bring the theaters under one roof for good management. All personnel must be responsible for building tuong, cheo, and cai luong to have a market share and continue to shine to serve the audience," People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong told Tien Phong .
Regarding professional work, Mr. Le Tuan Cuong affirmed that there are not many differences after the merger. Each person has their own role, there is no fear of confusion. The leader of the Vietnam Cheo Theater also said that there should be no fear of changes causing theaters to reduce performances.
"If the audience loves the stage, the stage will be lit up. Being refined, strong, and concise is essential in today's trend. We gain and lose, but the gains will definitely be greater. The important thing is to research the market together and bring the audience quality artistic products," People's Artist Tuan Cuong shared.

Mr. Hoang Van Long - Acting Director of the Vietnam Tuong Theatre - also expressed that the artists in the theatre are satisfied with the new policy. When merging into the Vietnam National Traditional Theatre, the theatres will still operate separately in the fields of Tuong, Cheo, and Cai Luong, only sharing a common management apparatus.
"I look forward to the unification. This will help focus our energy on traditional culture. We are promoting the cultural industry, always emphasizing the preservation of national cultural identity. We need to focus on national culture to elevate, grow and develop," said Mr. Hoang Van Long.
Theater leaders have had a working session with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to find the best solutions for merging the units. When merging theaters, it is necessary to re-determine the factors that affect traditional theater, from management mechanisms, investment to artists.
Opportunity to review and screen
The innovation of traditional arts is natural and necessary. People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien - Director of the Vietnam Opera House - emphasized that the merger of theaters creates an opportunity to review, filter, and retain truly capable people.
The merger of Tuong, Cheo and Cai Luong theatres creates challenges but also brings opportunities. A new theatre will preserve the quintessence of traditional theatre. This shows that the internal strength and potential of the new theatre is very great.
Regarding the headquarters of the Vietnam National Traditional Theater, the heads of the Tuong, Cheo, and Cai Luong theaters said there was no specific information yet.

On the evening of June 28 and 29, artists from the Vietnam Cheo Theatre performed the play Xuy Van - marking the final stage, closing the journey of the name Vietnam Cheo Theatre to open a new one. On the first night, more than 500 audiences came to the theater to support the artists. The leaders of the Vietnam Cheo Theatre said that the theater's performances in the past have been full of audiences.
Despite its limited facilities, the Vietnam Opera House still strives to bring creative plays. The Vietnam Opera House has also flourished, developing communication on various social media platforms. Opera has reached young audiences.
Sharing about the issue of theater facilities, People's Artist Tuan Cuong said that it is only one aspect. If the facilities are invested in well, artists will have more motivation to work. However, the most important thing is still the quality of work to meet the needs of that facility.
"When Tuong, Cheo or Cai Luong theaters merge, they must all move and transform. We are now chickens from the same mother, the same house, and must share with each other," said People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong.
