On the morning of July 11, the Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital (HCMC) held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hospital's founding (1975 - 2025), the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the medical examination and treatment sector, and the 30th anniversary of performing the first stem cell transplant in Vietnam.

Dr. Phu Chi Dung, Director of the Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital, said that after 50 years of establishment and development, the hospital has made remarkable progress and become one of the two largest end-line hospitals in the country in hematology and blood transfusion.

Currently, each year the hospital receives about 140,000 outpatients and 10,000 inpatients.

The hospital accepts and treats all patients from children to adults with benign hematological genetic diseases (bone marrow failure, hemolytic anemia, thalassemia syndrome, coagulation syndrome...), or malignant (leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia...).

In addition to medical examination and treatment, the hospital also has the leading blood bank in the country. In 2024, the hospital produced and supplied more than 650,000 blood products of all kinds (including packed white blood cells, platelets, frozen plasma, cold plasma, granulocyte products, etc.).

These blood products are supplied to almost all public and non-public hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and some provinces in the West and South.

It is expected that from January 2026, the supply will be expanded to hospitals in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Duong (old).

In the near future, Ho Chi Minh City will start construction on a new blood bank, with a capacity four times that of the hospital's current blood bank. The hospital's blood bank currently has a capacity of 250,000 units of blood per year.

According to the City People's Committee, this new blood bank will be built on an area of 3,500m2 ; total investment is 699,482 billion VND, located at Tan Kien medical cluster.

Regarding stem cell transplants, Dr. Dung said the hospital is a pioneer with more than 700 cases performed since the first case in 1995, leading the country in the number of transplants.

The hospital also supports some hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City to perform stem cell transplants such as Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital.

Thanks to the unique mechanism of Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Dung said that the hospital can quickly access the latest treatment methods, the latest techniques and the latest drugs without going through the complicated approval process of the Drug Administration, helping Vietnamese patients not need to go abroad for treatment.

In the coming time, the hospital will apply technology in treatment, including the application of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, and especially the development of cell and gene therapy methods.

International medical "bright spot"

In her speech, Vice Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy respectfully acknowledged and highly praised the efforts and achievements the hospital has made in 50 years of construction and development.

The hospital is not only a place to treat blood diseases but also a center for safe blood supply, stem cell transplantation, and professional support for many organizations. The highlight of the hospital is that it is one of two hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City that meets JCI quality standards (international quality standards in the medical field).

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee has high expectations for the hospital in the coming time. Continue to innovate hospital management according to a model of great transparency, taking patients as the center.

At the same time, proactively plan and develop a team of hematology experts, continue to maintain and expand JCI quality, develop specialized centers that meet regional and international standards...

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee suggested that the hospital research and develop a second treatment center, especially in areas far from the city center, to better serve people and reduce travel time.
