The Information reported on July 6 that TikTok is developing a new version of the app for users in the US, ahead of plans to sell the app to a group of investors.
The move comes as US President Donald Trump said on July 5 that he will begin talks with China on July 8 or 9 about a possible deal involving TikTok. Mr. Trump said the US was closing in on a deal to sell the short video app.
TikTok had planned to launch the new app on US app stores on September 5, according to the report. Last month, Mr. Trump extended until September 17 for ByteDance, its Chinese-based parent company, to divest TikTok's US assets.
The Information also said TikTok users will have to download a new app to continue using the service, although the current version will still work until March next year — a date that could change.
A deal was struck earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based company, majority owned and operated by US investors.
However, the plan was suspended after Beijing signaled it would not approve it amid Trump's announcement of higher tariffs on Chinese goods. President Trump said the US would likely have to wait for China to approve the deal.
