Lighting up the faith from new homes

With the care and support of the community, each newly built house not only erases the fear of dilapidation and makeshift houses but also opens up hope for disadvantaged families to rise up in life.

For many years, Tran Thi Thanh My (40 years old, in village 9, Hoa Phu commune) and her husband have lived in an old wooden house left by her mother before she passed away. Over time, the corrugated iron roof has rusted, the wooden walls have become loose and broken due to termites, and every heavy rain, water splashes everywhere. On windy days, she has to stay up all night to keep watch, afraid that the house will collapse at any time.

Tran Thi Thanh My and her husband (village 9, Hoa Phu commune) are happy to have a new, spacious house.

Ms. My's family is near-poor. She sells vegetables at the market. Her husband has no job and does whatever he is hired to do. His income is unstable, while their four children are still in school. Life is difficult, and Ms. My and her husband have never dared to think about building a new house.

Fortunately, in 2024, her family received 50 million VND from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Buon Ma Thuot City (old) to build a house. She and her husband boldly borrowed more from the bank and asked for help from relatives to build a new home.

“Before, every time I saw my children sitting in a damp corner of the house with books, I could only sigh. Now that I have a house, I can do business with peace of mind. The happiest thing is that my children have a decent place to live so they can study with peace of mind,” Ms. My said.

Her husband left when her three children were still young, and Mrs. Pham Thi Hoa (52 years old, in village 8, Ea Kar commune) has had to struggle alone for the past several decades. The whole family lives in a rickety wooden house with rotten walls and broken walls. The family's livelihood mainly depends on 2 sao of land for growing crops and hired work. "My house used to be very dilapidated, when it rained, water poured from the roof to the floor, we had to use pots and basins to catch it. Many times while we were eating, the water splashed all over the tray of food," Mrs. Hoa confided. The dream of a solid home seemed to have ended for this woman.

However, in 2024, thanks to the support of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ea Kar district (old) with 40 million VND and the Red Cross Society of Ea Kar district (old) with 30 million VND, along with the help of neighbors, a new sturdy house was built. Ms. Hoa shared: “I am very happy to receive support from local authorities and organizations to build a house. The house is not only a place to shelter from the rain and sun, but also a motivation for my mother and I to work hard. I also applied to escape poverty to give support to people in more difficult circumstances.”

The joy of "settling down" was also evident in the eyes of Mr. Y Von Nie (38 years old, in M'Ar hamlet, Ea Kar commune) and his wife on the day they stepped into their new, spacious house that was handed over on the occasion of the April 30 - May 1 holiday. Before that, his whole family lived in a small hut with a corrugated iron roof and temporary walls. With irregular jobs and a son with a congenital disability, life was already difficult, so the dream of a solid house for him was just a distant dream. With the support of 80 million VND from the Dak Lak Provincial Police (old) and the local government, the couple was able to build a real home for their child. Looking around the new house that still smelled of paint, Mr. Y Von could not hide his emotions: "I always thought that I would never have a decent house in my whole life, but now I get to live in a new house on the occasion of a major national holiday. For my wife and I, this is truly an extremely precious gift."

Each family and each situation has its own difficult journey, but the biggest thing they have in common is that they all receive support from the community. It is this support that has changed their lives. No longer anxious during rainy nights or worried about cracked walls and leaky roofs, poor households can now work with peace of mind, raise their children, and believe in a brighter future.
