Production area reaches over 28,000 hectares

During storm No. 3 (Yagi), farming was the most heavily affected agricultural sector with estimated losses of tens of thousands of billions of VND. Not only that, this also risks affecting the supply of agricultural products and food in the last months of the year and the Lunar New Year 2025.

Based on the assessment of the situation, Hanoi determined that developing winter crops is of particular importance. Accordingly, the agricultural sector has developed a plan, striving to increase the planting area to 32,000 - 33,000 hectares (an increase of 3,000 - 4,000 hectares compared to the plan in early 2024).

Director of Dong Cao General Service Cooperative (Me Linh district) Dam Van Dua said that the unit prioritized short-term vegetables to put into production right after storm No. 3. Thanks to that, the cooperative has been able to regularly supply products to the market.

In localities, the government encourages farmers to maximize the area of crops to compensate for the damage caused by natural disasters. According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, as of mid-November 2024, the total area of crau in the city reached more than 28,000 hectares, equivalent to about 90% of the 2024 winter crop planting plan.

Strive to plant all areas

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the average temperature in the last months of 2024 will be approximately equal to or higher than the average value of many years in the same period; total rainfall in the North (including Hanoi) is likely to be approximately equal to the average of many years. Basic weather conditions are favorable for winter crop production.

To ensure the target of increasing the planting area by 3,000 - 4,000 hectares, localities are continuing to propagate, mobilize and guide farmers to actively plant winter crops such as potatoes, cold-loving vegetables, biomass corn, corn kernels, etc.

Head of the Economic Department of Soc Son district, Hoang Thi Ha, said that the unit is coordinating with the district's Agricultural Service Center to focus on directing, propagating, and guiding people to apply scientific advances and techniques in caring for and preventing pests in winter crops to ensure productivity and quality of crops.

“We are still closely following the crop schedule and actual weather developments to adjust the crop structure appropriately; at the same time, flexibly applying land preparation and planting methods to take advantage of the season and expand the winter crop area. Developing a group of winter crops that have advantages, long-term preservation ability and good consumption markets…” - Ms. Hoang Thi Ha added.

On the side of the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Director Luu Thi Hang said that she had issued a document early on assigning grassroots staff to closely coordinate with local authorities to disseminate and provide technical guidance on caring for some major crops in the 2024 Winter crop. At the same time, she said that she would strengthen the investigation, detection, estimation, and forecast of the situation of harmful organisms, and provide timely and effective guidance on pest control.

The development of production chains and the application of mechanization to improve the efficiency of winter crop cultivation, ensuring the supply of agricultural products for the Lunar New Year 2025 is also being focused on by the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection. At the same time, the Department also promotes guidance and support for localities in granting codes for growing areas and packaging facilities for crops serving export purposes in order to expand the market for winter crop products.
