The win in the second round of the US Open helped Sinner maintain his impressive form at the final Grand Slam of the year, while extinguishing any hopes of a surprise from Popyrin.
A year after Popyrin shocked Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows, Sinner put in a convincing performance lasting 2 hours and 1 minute, giving his opponent no chance of repeating the feat.

"It was a very solid performance. I felt like we both didn't serve very well today, so we had a lot of counter-attacks from the back of the court, but I felt quite comfortable today. Obviously I'm happy to be in the next round," Sinner said after the match.
Sinner broke early in the second game of the first set, setting the stage for an easy win. The Italian converted five of his nine break points and saved all five break points he faced. With this result, Sinner will face Denis Shapovalov in the third round.
With a 33-4 record on the season and a 23-match winning streak at hard-court Grand Slams (including the 2024 and 2025 Australian Opens and last year's US Open), Sinner is bidding to become the first player to successfully defend the US Open men's singles title since Roger Federer in 2008. He is also in a fierce battle with Carlos Alcaraz to retain the world No. 1 ranking after the US Open.
The key moment of the match came in the second set, when Sinner brilliantly saved three break points, including an ace on his second serve, to hold on for a 4-2 lead. Popyrin rarely had a chance to break through Sinner's solid defense, with the Italian constantly hitting powerful and accurate shots.

Sinner, who is 19-5 at the US Open, will face Shapovalov in the third round. The only previous meeting between the two players was at the 2021 Australian Open, where Shapovalov won in five sets. The Canadian advanced to the third round with a 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Valentin Royer.
Also on Thursday, 15th-seeded Andrey Rublev defeated Tristan Boyer 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(4) to reach the third round of the US Open for the seventh consecutive time. Rublev will next face Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, who continued his impressive run at Flushing Meadows by defeating Adam Walton 7-6(5), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
