Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Fenerbahce after just six games of the 2025/26 season. The decision was made shortly after a 1-0 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League play-off round, which saw the Turkish side relegated to the Europa League.

In a statement on their official Twitter page, Fenerbahce wrote: “We have parted company with Jose Mourinho, who will take over as head coach from the start of the 2024/25 season. We thank him for his contributions and wish him success in his next steps.”
Mourinho (62 years old) signed a two-year contract with Fenerbahce in May 2024. However, his time in Türkiye ended earlier than expected. The main reason could be that he could not help Fenerbahce qualify for the Champions League.
According to Spor Arena, the relationship between coach Mourinho and the Fenerbahce board has been tense since the summer transfer window. The Portuguese strategist has repeatedly complained about the club's way of working.
Before the match against Benfica, he was blunt in his criticism: "If the Champions League is so important, the club should have acted in the transfer window between the two matches against Feyenoord and Benfica. I don't think Fenerbahce have a real shopping list."

This statement only escalated the situation, forcing the board to decide to fire him. In addition, before the match, Vice President Hamdi Akin declared that Fenerbahce would easily defeat Benfica. When asked about this statement, Coach Mourinho made the situation more tense when he suddenly replied: "I don't even know who he is, no one has ever introduced him to me."
This is not the first time Mourinho has expressed doubts about his future. Last October, he said he would choose a club that is not in Europe if he left Fenerbahce. So when his old statements were dug up this week, many Man Utd fans joked that the “Special One” could return to Old Trafford to replace coach Ruben Amorim.
In addition, coach Mourinho is also on the list of candidates to replace Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest, after this coach had a conflict with the team's leadership.
Notably, within just one day, two former Man Utd coaches lost their jobs in Türkiye. Before coach Mourinho, coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also fired by Besiktas after a shocking defeat to Lausanne in the Europa Conference League.
