Sources from Digital Chat Station (China) said that Apple plans to refine the design of the Dynamic Island notch on the iPhone 17 series that will be launched this year.
Specifically, in a post on Weibo, this person said that Apple plans to change the system with a completely new interface called Smart Island.
Although not mentioned in detail, this is most likely a reference to the leaker's revelations earlier this year.
In February, Digital Chat Station revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will use metalens technology for the Face ID system, integrating the transmitter and receiver into a single structure. This will reduce the size and thickness of the components.
As a result, Dynamic Island is also more compact. In addition to the iPhone, this technology will also be included in the next iPad Pro line and a rumored foldable iPad model.
Unlike traditional iPhone lenses that use curved lenses to bend light into the image sensor, metalens is a type of ultra-thin, flat lens. The tiny nanostructure is capable of controlling and focusing light with high precision, according to MacRumors.
However, this rumor contradicts information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in January, who said that the iPhone 17 models will not have a smaller Dynamic Island. Kuo's view also contradicts an earlier prediction from analyst Jeff Pu in 2024.
Like Digital Chat Station, Pu believes that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will use metalens technology for Face ID, which will significantly reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. Jeff Pu has repeated this prediction many times and has a fairly accurate history of predicting Apple products.
Dynamic Island first appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022 and was later expanded to the entire iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineup. However, the size of the feature has remained the same across generations. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 lineup in September.
