On September 29, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to organize the Conference on Sustainable Dragon Fruit Development in Vietnam to promote low-carbon product production and respond to climate change.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, dragon fruit with an area of about 55,000 hectares and an output of about 1.3 million tons/year, annual export turnover of over 1 billion USD, is one of Vietnam's key products. Currently, many countries have high requirements for products that must be produced to reduce emissions and develop sustainably. Therefore, dragon fruit needs a legal corridor, a production process that reduces emissions but ensures quality, and enhances brand value.

Many dragon fruit farmers reduce emissions

According to the UNDP representative in Vietnam, through surveys, European consumers mostly choose foods with emission reduction labels. Therefore, dragon fruit needs to be produced in a way that meets market demands, is green, and is resilient to climate change.

Since 2020, UNDP has supported the green transformation program to turn dragon fruit into a green value chain for many farmers and cooperatives, and the results have been of higher quality. Dragon fruit has been produced according to the process of economical irrigation in the face of climate change, and flowering lighting uses LED lights to save energy. Notably, many farmers have implemented an electronic traceability program to increase the value of dragon fruit when commercializing it on the market and participating in the global value chain.
