As a leading hospital in the western region of Quang Ngai province, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 (formerly Kon Tum General Hospital) receives, treats and provides emergency care to hundreds of patients every day.
However, the amount of blood available for treatment is currently in short supply. Therefore, the unit is implementing many solutions to supplement the blood reserve to serve the treatment of diseases.
According to specialist doctor I Le Thi Kim Linh, Head of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2, the current blood reserve is only 50% compared to the same period in 2024. The reason is that due to the restructuring of the two-level local government and the merger of the province, the annual planned activities are not maintained.
Statistics from the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2, show that currently all reserve blood groups are in short supply.
Previously, the hospital regularly coordinated with the Red Cross Society of Kon Tum province (formerly) to supplement blood reserves, but now the coordination has been interrupted due to the merger process and implementation of two-level local government.
“To supplement the blood supply, the unit has regularly called on organizations and individuals to participate in voluntary blood donation on information pages and social networks. We also clearly state that blood donors can come to the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Department, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 at any time, every day, there will be staff on duty to receive blood," said Dr. Le Thi Kim Linh.
For example, Mr. Tran Van Phat, a resident of Dak Bla Ward, Quang Ngai Province, had a relative who was being treated at Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 and needed type O blood for treatment. Because the hospital's reserve was empty, the hospital posted the information on Facebook. About 15 minutes later, Ms. Nguyen Khoa Dieu Tien, a resident of Kon Tum Ward, Quang Ngai Province, contacted him to donate blood.
“I accidentally saw information about someone needing blood type O on social media, so I contacted the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 to donate to the patient. I think that since I am young and healthy, I will try my best to help those who need blood for treatment," Ms. Dieu Tien shared.
Dr. Le Huu Loi, Deputy Director of Quang Ngai General Hospital 2, said that thanks to the blood reserve as well as the regular posting of information on social networks, the hospital's blood supply is still sufficient to save patients. However, if there is a case where blood needs to be transfused to many people at the same time, the blood reserve will be at risk of not being enough.
In order to proactively provide blood for emergency and treatment, Quang Ngai General Hospital 2 has developed a plan to ensure timely blood supply; at the same time, it has promoted propaganda and called on staff, employees and people to actively participate in voluntary blood donation, contributing to timely treatment for patients. Along with that, the team of doctors and medical staff at the hospital also regularly directly participate in blood donation, demonstrating the sense of responsibility, sharing and noble medical ethics of a physician.
Dr. Le Huu Loi emphasized that the need for treatment of patients at the hospital is increasing. He called on officials and civil servants in the whole province and all people to donate blood to help patients overcome critical conditions; thereby joining hands and contributing to the hospital in treating patients, with the motto "a drop of blood donated can save a life"./.
