Education is not only about imparting knowledge, but also about nurturing the soul, shaping personality, and arousing national pride. In the context of globalization and strong transformation of modern society, promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups in the higher education environment is becoming a humane and long-term strategy.

National culture – the foundation for comprehensive education

In recent times, Thai Nguyen University Branch in Ha Giang province has been effectively implementing many educational models associated with preserving and spreading national cultural identity.

Dr. Luc Quang Tan - Director of the Branch shared: "National culture is the soul of education. A sustainable education cannot be separated from the traditional cultural roots. We identify the preservation and promotion of national identity as not a peripheral activity, but the core content in the training strategy of the Branch."

In that spirit, Thai Nguyen University Branch in Ha Giang province has actively integrated cultural elements into its curriculum, extracurricular activities and student life.

The educational space is no longer rigid and far from reality, but becomes closer, more lively and rich in identity. In particular, students are encouraged to express the beauty of their national culture through costumes, cuisine, music, festivals... in annual events such as the opening ceremony, November 20, spring fair, elegant student contest...

In 2025, Thai Nguyen University Branch in Ha Giang province officially opened the training program "Vietnamese Language and Culture", a step demonstrating strategic vision and sensitivity to the requirements of international integration and preservation of national culture.

Dr. Luc Quang Tan emphasized: “This major not only helps learners gain a deeper understanding of Vietnamese language and culture, but also contributes to forming a quality workforce for education, communications, tourism, diplomacy, etc., especially in the context of Vietnam's increasingly deep integration with the world.”

Besides, the new field of study brings many practical benefits, contributing to the preservation of traditional cultural values such as language, beliefs, customs, folklore, etc.

Create opportunities to train Vietnamese language teachers for ethnic minority students in the northern mountainous provinces, where the mother tongue is still a barrier to access to knowledge.

Expand international cooperation through exchange programs for lecturers, students, and researchers on Vietnamese language and culture.

Meet the human resource needs in industries such as translation, interpretation, cultural tourism, multicultural communication, etc.

Bringing national culture into every educational activity

Not only stopping at classroom teaching, the Branch also promotes experiential and creative extracurricular activities to inspire cultural pride in students.

Many ethnic cultural clubs have been established such as the H'mong Cultural Club, the H'mong Panpipe Club, etc., where students can both learn and preserve traditional values. Competitions such as "The Beauty of Ethnic Costumes" attract a large number of students to participate and spread the message of preserving identity. The Spring Fair is not only an opportunity to display local products but also integrates start-up activities - where students can combine culture and business to develop a sustainable economy from their homeland's identity.

The Branch also coordinates with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to organize exhibitions "Colors of Ethnic Cultures", where students and people can exchange, learn and honor the diversity of indigenous cultures.

Despite many positive results, cultural preservation in the educational environment still faces many challenges. The decline of traditional culture due to the influence of modern lifestyle, labor migration, and the impact of popular culture is happening more and more strongly. Resources for preserving activities are limited; the team of lecturers with deep understanding of indigenous ethnic cultures is also not many.

Promoting cultural values does not stop at preservation, but also needs to be implemented through practical training models.

Faced with that reality, Dr. Luc Quang Tan said: “We have determined that preserving cultural identity cannot be done alone. In the coming time, the Branch will promote cooperation with research institutes, cultural agencies, and local authorities to mobilize more resources and experts. At the same time, we will continue to expand creative playgrounds and extracurricular programs associated with indigenous culture for students.”

Another important strategy is to make ethnic culture the main content in training human resources for the highlands. From there, improve the quality of education and contribute to the sustainable development of ethnic minority communities.

It can be seen that education is not only the key to open the door of knowledge, but also the bridge between the past, present and future. What Thai Nguyen University Branch in Ha Giang province is doing is a clear demonstration of a comprehensive approach to education - where knowledge goes hand in hand with culture, creativity goes hand in hand with national identity.

In the modern flow, promoting cultural values does not stop at preservation, but also needs to be implemented through practical training models, creative educational activities and the spirit of dedication of the young generation.

The journey to preserve and promote culture in higher education is still full of obstacles, but with faith, passion and the right strategy, it will certainly open up new opportunities for an education rich in identity and steady integration.
