OpenAI, the technology company behind the global craze ChatGPT, is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered web browser that is expected to change the way users access the Internet and challenge the long-standing dominance of Google Chrome.

According to informed sources, the new browser is expected to officially launch in the next few weeks and promises to bring a completely different experience thanks to the integration of a ChatGPT-like chat interface to fundamentally change the way users access the Internet.

The product will also give OpenAI more direct access to the core of Google's success: user data.

OpenAI opted to develop its own browser rather than simply create a “plug-in” for other companies’ browsers to gain more control over the amount of data it can collect from users, a key factor in the AI race, a source said.

If it is embraced by ChatGPT's 500 million users as expected, OpenAI's new product could become a major competitor to Google's massive advertising ecosystem, which relies heavily on the Chrome browser to collect data and direct traffic to its search engine.

Sources revealed that OpenAI's browser is designed so that users can perform some operations directly in the chat interface like ChatGPT instead of having to click on traditional links when needing to access the website, thereby providing a new and more optimal interactive experience.

In addition, browser access to users' web activities will enable AI "virtual assistants" to perform actions on behalf of users, such as booking or filling out forms right on websites.

According to a source familiar with the matter, this is a step in OpenAI's long-term strategy to integrate its services more deeply into users' personal and daily work lives.

Although OpenAI declined to comment, leaked information shows that the new product is developed based on the open source Chromium code – the main platform behind Chrome and other browsers such as Edge or Opera.

Notably, OpenAI once recruited two veteran Google Vice Presidents, who were also part of the original Chrome development team.

According to web data analytics firm, Google Chrome currently accounts for more than two-thirds of the global market share with more than 3 billion users, while Apple's Safari browser is in second place with a large gap, accounting for only about 16% of the market share.

Chrome's importance in providing user data for Alphabet to optimize advertising has been so great that the US Department of Justice has ordered Google to divest after a US judge ruled last year that the company had an illegal monopoly in online search.

However, with the rising AI wave, the position of the technology giants may also be shaken. Competitors such as Perplexity, The Browser Company or Brave are also developing AI-integrated browsers, creating fierce competition in the market./.
