IELTS is good but not enough
Sharing at the online consultation program "How to conquer English, study abroad scholarships?" held yesterday afternoon (July 2) at Thanh Nien Newspaper, Master Do Thi Ngoc Anh, IELTS teacher at DOL English, who won a scholarship and graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics with honors from the University of Finance (under the Russian government), and a scholarship and graduated with a master's degree in finance with honors from the University of West of England (UK), said that it is true that English scores, especially IELTS, are almost a prerequisite for students to be able to set foot abroad to study, especially to hunt for scholarships. However, having a high IELTS score alone is not enough.

"Foreign universities, especially top universities, look for well-rounded candidates. GPA (grade point average) in other subjects is extremely important to candidates. At the same time, in the scholarship application, students need to prove to the school that you are not only a good student but also actively participate in community activities. In addition to knowledge, qualifications, and social skills, you also have the courage and ability to overcome difficulties...", Ms. Ngoc Anh said.
According to Mr. Tran Thien Minh, IELTS and SAT teacher at DOL English, who won a high school scholarship in the US, to be effective in applying for a scholarship to study abroad, students should pay attention to two most important points. First, each person should have a companion, a suitable guide, a suitable system of methods in studying, reviewing, and preparing documents to apply for a scholarship to study abroad. Second, it is necessary to determine the goal and plan to achieve that goal.

THE BEST TIME TO STUDY ABROAD
Ms. Pham Thi Nhung, career counselor, university application support at Scotch AGS, said that one of the questions that parents are most concerned about is "when is the right time to study abroad?". According to Ms. Nhung, this depends on three aspects: one is the student's learning ability, two is the family's financial ability, and three is "life skills" - the student's readiness to live away from home, needing to integrate into an environment with different culture, language, and learning methods.
When determining whether students will study abroad at university, it is necessary to base on the psychological characteristics and personality of each student when choosing a high school program, meeting their long-term goals. Currently, when choosing any generaleducation program, students and parents must consider the subject combination. For example, with students at Scotch AGS, students must study 3 compulsory subjects: math, English and research project. Second, if they have orientations and strengths related to some specific professions, students must prepare basic knowledge, for example, if they like art and painting, they need to participate in the gifted drawing course.

2025 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION EXAM IS DIFFICULT, WILL IT AFFECT SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY ABROAD?
Ms. Ngoc Anh emphasized that finding a scholarship to study abroad is a comprehensive assessment process, and the impact from the 2025 high school exam scores is there but not significant if students are well prepared in other aspects.
"Foreign universities will look at your academic process, including your average high school GPA, consistent academic performance over the years, and international certificates such as IELTS, SAT, or AP. If your high school exam score is not really good, but you have a good transcript, along with high international certificates (especially having an early English certificate with good scores), then that can still completely compensate. Moreover, foreign schools also highly appreciate extracurricular activities, soft skills, and personal essays that demonstrate the student's personality and ambitions," said Ms. Ngoc Anh.
