Mountainous area of Badakhshan province in northern Afghanistan
Reuters news agency on January 21 quoted a police spokesman in Badakhshan province (Afghanistan) as saying that the force had received information about a plane crash in the province.
The incident happened overnight in a remote mountainous area of Badakhshan province in northern Afghanistan. The spokesman said there was no information about the type of plane, the cause of the crash or the number of casualties.
WION radio station quoted information from Afghan media and a Taliban official saying that this was an Indian plane flying to Moscow (Russia), crashed in the Wakhan region of Badakhshan province.
The fall site is on Mount Topkhaneh, a mountainous area that overlaps the districts of Karan, Manjan and Zibak in Badakhshan.
United News of India on January 21 also confirmed that this was an Indian passenger plane, which disappeared from radar screens on the evening of January 20 and crashed in the mountainous area of Zibak district. Information about the number of passengers, their condition, and the cause of the incident is currently unknown.
According to Reuters, citing Russian aviation officials, a Russian-registered plane carrying six people appeared to have disappeared from radar screens while flying over Afghanistan on the evening of January 20. Russian aviation officials said it was a French-made Dassault Falcon 10 aircraft, which was on a charter flight from India to Moscow (Russia).
Meanwhile, Indian authorities also said that the plane that crashed in Afghanistan did not belong to any Indian airline.
