Vietnamese durian loses serious market share in China, Thailand dominates

The increasing presence of fruits from Cambodia and Thailand in the Chinese market is creating direct competitive pressure on the Vietnamese fruit industry, especially in two key products: mango and durian.

According to Produce Report, the volume of fresh durian imported into China has decreased significantly in the first five months of this year. Official data from China Customs shows that from January to May, the volume of imported fresh durian decreased from 582,300 tons (in 2024) to 390,900 tons, a decrease of 33% compared to the same period last year.

During the same period, the import value of this item also decreased by 33%, from 2.86 billion USD to 1.93 billion USD. Among the countries exporting fresh durian to China, Vietnam was the most affected.

According to data from the Vietnam Customs Department, in the first 5 months of the year, Vietnam's durian export turnover only reached 387 million USD, down nearly 58% compared to the same period last year. The proportion of durian in the total export value of fruits and vegetables also decreased sharply, from 35% to 17%.

In May alone, durian exports continued to decline, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline. This resulted in total fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first five months of the year reaching only 2.3 billion USD, down 14% compared to the same period last year.

The main reason is that China, the market that accounts for 72% of Vietnam's durian exports, has sharply reduced its imports of this item. In the first 5 months of the year, Vietnam only earned 278 million USD from the Chinese market, down 67% compared to the same period in 2024.

Currently, Thailand remains the largest supplier of fresh durian to China, although its export volume and value also decreased by 22% and 24% respectively.
