The province has issued specific policies, plans, directives and implementation guidelines with contents and solutions to improve the lives and take care of the physical and mental health of the elderly in the province; including Plan No. 31/KH-UBND dated January 26, 2022 implementing the National Action Program on the Elderly in Quang Ninh province for the period 2021-2030. Thanks to that, the inter-sectoral coordination and direction system has been strengthened, and elderly health care activities are no longer scattered but closely linked between the health sector , the government, the Fatherland Front and mass organizations.
Communication, propaganda and dissemination of policies and laws on the elderly and elderly health care have been promoted in the community in conjunction with the campaigns "All people unite to build new rural areas", "All people unite to build cultural life", propaganda at medical units... creating people's participation in caring for and protecting the health of the elderly.
The province pays special attention to and invests in facilities for the health care of the elderly. The Geriatric - Rehabilitation Hospital was put into use at the end of 2022 with a scale of 320 beds and a 128-slice CT system, digital X-ray, automatic immunoassay machine, etc., opening up a space for intensive treatment for the elderly. Along with that, many provincial hospitals have established geriatric departments or integrated specialized clinics. More than 12 departments at the remaining facilities have arranged separate examination rooms or tables, 340 inpatient beds are prioritized for the elderly, helping to reduce pressure and improve the experience when coming for examination.
The network of commune and ward health stations actively examines and records chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, tuberculosis, mental illness, etc., and organizes home examinations for the elderly who cannot move around on their own. Preventive health activities are also promoted through projects to prevent hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, helping to detect and control complications in the elderly early.
The medical staff is always interested in training and updating their knowledge about geriatrics. There are 18 medical staff who have received specialized training in geriatrics organized by the Central Institute of Geriatrics; 5 doctors have completed the French-Vietnamese Geriatrics Training Program of Strasbourg University - Republic of France... The medical units of the province have actively organized and participated in training courses and professional training on common diseases in the elderly, elderly care... The medical team of the village and social work collaborators are also instructed in communication skills and health counseling for the elderly at home.
Humanitarian and charitable medical examination and treatment activities are also aimed at the elderly. Every October or the Action Month for the Elderly has become an occasion for screening and free medicine distribution for thousands of people in disadvantaged areas. Elderly clubs at the commune and town levels maintain regular activities, instructing on self-care skills and appropriate exercise. The network of population and village health collaborators reaches out to homes to communicate behavior change and raise awareness about elderly health care.
Through the above activities and programs, it contributes to improving the quality of examination, consultation and health management for the elderly in the province. It is known that from 2024 to present, more than 338,000 elderly people have been examined; nearly 62,000 elderly people have received inpatient treatment. Currently, the province continues to prioritize resources, build communication campaigns and a series of integrated activities, creating a ripple effect in the community in caring for and protecting the health of the elderly in the area.
