The situation on the front near Orikhiv, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which was the center of the Ukrainian army's (AFU) summer counteroffensive in 2023, has escalated rapidly. According to the Ukrainian side, for the first time in three years, the Russian army (RFAF) has launched a large-scale offensive on this sector of the front along the entire line of contact in the area. The battalion commander of the 65th Independent Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the AFU, confirmed that the RFAF units were conducting an attack in small tactical groups of 3-4 people, but simultaneously along a wide arc of the front.
The Ukrainian side said that the RFAF is using the entire available arsenal to carry out offensive operations. They use large FPV UAVs to carry out attacks. In addition, the RFAF also conducts aerial reconnaissance with medium-range reconnaissance UAVs and provides specialized artillery support... According to a Ukrainian commander who spoke on condition of anonymity, the goal of the offensive is to establish control over the strategic Mariupol-Zaporizhzhia highway, thereby cutting off supply routes to Ukrainian troops in the northern Zaporizhzhia region, capturing Orekhov, advancing to Kamenskoye and further to Kamyshevakha. RFAF units here are said to be using offensive tactics through Ukrainian defenses, destroying ammunition, weapons, equipment and wearing down enemy forces. The attacks are ongoing, around the clock, without stopping. Units of the 247th Rostov Regiment, together with the troops of the 108th RFAF Regiment, have completed the operation to take control of the village of Kamenskoye, south of the city of Zaporizhzhia. They raised the Russian flag and the banner of the unit in the center of the village. Rybar channel reported that the Russian troops are clearing the remnants of the Ukrainian troops in Kamenskoye. The village of Kamenskoye is located west of Orekhovo and about 28 kilometers south of the city of Zaporizhzhia. After capturing this important village, the next village that Russian units could attack in the coming days is the village of Stepnogorsk, located north of Kamenskoye.
The assault on the village of Kamenskoye was accompanied by significant difficulties, namely the obstacle of the river terrain (at the mouth of the Yanchekrak River). Here, the AFU also built a large network of defensive structures; at the same time, the AFU also carried out continuous artillery fire, causing great damage to the Russian assault formation. Despite the obstacles of the terrain, as well as the fierce resistance of the AFU, the RFAF's operation to gain full control over Kamenskoye was carried out in a short time. Even the combat units of the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR), urgently reinforced here, could not stop the Russian advance. It was previously reported that the Zaporizhzhia Front began to move after a pause, since the AFU counteroffensive in the summer campaign of 2023 failed; this was also acknowledged by the AFU's Deep State analytical channel. In connection with the sudden heavy offensive of the RFAF in southern Zaporizhzhia, President Zelensky urgently convened a meeting of the AFU General Staff. According to President Zelensky, the situation has worsened in the Zaporizhzhia region, as well as in the Pokrovsk and Novopavlovskoye directions. The term "Pokrovsk direction" reappeared in Ukrainian terminology after the reserve forces under the command of General Drapatiy were sent there. Now these reserves were largely put out of action, and had to retreat partly to the area bordering Mirnograd and Pokrovsk; partly they were surrounded in the area of Novoekonomichesky and Nikolaevka.
During the AFU General Staff meeting, the issue of the RFAF's advance south of Zaporizhzhia was raised. There, the RFAF crossed the north bank of the Yanchekrak River, occupied most of the village of Kamenskoye, and took control of the village of Lobkovoe, located southeast of Kamenskoye. With the capture of Lobkovoe, the Ukrainians lost the ability to counterattack the Russian flank at Kamenskoye. The AFU has not yet admitted to losing control of Lobkovoe; an emergency meeting of the AFU General Staff with the participation of President Zelensky in Kiev showed that the situation in southern Zaporizhzhia is very difficult. Currently, most of the Kamenka-Orekhov road is under control with RFAF fire, this road is about 10 km from the western outskirts of Orekhov. From the south and east - 5 and 8 km, respectively. With the loss of Lobkovo and Stepovoye (Stepnoye), the AFU has lost the ability to attack the Russian forces in Kamenka from the flank. At the same time, the Russian forces are about 26 km away from the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, the capital of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. At such a distance, the RFAF can use conventional artillery, or FPV UAVs, to attack the city of Zaporizhzhia.
Ukrainian sources claim that President Zelensky has ordered the AFU to "push back Russian troops south of the Yanchekrak River" and "eliminate the threat of artillery attacks on the city of Zaporizhia." However, the AFU is having to stretch its forces across all battlefields, so the President's order to the AFU is very difficult. (photo source: Military Review, Ukrinform, TASS).
