Information displays, large touch screens for entertainment, more beautiful interfaces, fewer buttons… are new features that automakers are applying to many car models in recent years. Because most automakers believe that a digital cockpit with digitized functions on the touch screen will attract customers when choosing to buy a car. However, according to the initial car quality study just published by JD Power, this approach is no longer suitable.

The infotainment system as well as some functions integrated into a touch screen are having more problems than other parts of a new car in the early stages of use, showing that users are being overloaded with technology, causing more annoyance than impression.

The overall number of infotainment issues has improved since last year, but touchscreens still dominate the list of top automotive frustrations. While the concentration of features like climate control on touchscreens may seem modern and sleek, they are distracting and time-consuming, with too many actions instead of just pressing or twisting physical buttons like before.

“While customers find larger touchscreens visually appealing, the integration of so many functions in the vehicle causes a lot of inconvenience and even frustration on the part of the user. Customers have to touch and swipe across multiple windows to access key vehicle functions such as climate settings, ventilation levels, and even opening the windows,” explained Frank Hanley, senior director of automotive evaluation at JD Power.

Returning to physical buttons for key features could help alleviate these complaints and improve the user experience, notes Frank Hanley.

In addition to the display issues, according to JD Power, car users are also experiencing inconveniences related to the design of cup holders on some new car models. More and more drivers carry reusable water bottles, coffee pots, and many other oddly shaped containers... but the design of the holders for these parts in their cars has not kept up. JD Power said there has been an increase in complaints about cup and bottle holders in cars not being suitable for actual use, a seemingly small problem but showing that car manufacturers are still unable to meet the needs of users.
