Long An - A memorable milestone!

On July 1, 2025, the new Tay Ninh province, based on the merger of Tay Ninh and Long An provinces, officially came into operation. The administrative unit of Long An province completed its historical mission. Long An will be the name of a ward of Tay Ninh province. 69 years since the administrative unit of Long An province first appeared (under the French colonial period) and 50 years since the country's reunification, to date, the name Long An province has become a very dear thing in the hearts of many people.

Long An - Long history

The name Long An province first appeared on the administrative map in 1956 when the enemy merged part of Tan An province with Cho Lon province, taking the common name of Long An province. On our side, around July 1957, Long An province and Kien Tuong province were also established. Long An province at that time included the remaining land of the old Cho Lon province and the old Tan An province.

After the liberation of the South in 1976, Long An province (old) and Kien Tuong province merged, taking the common name of Long An province. After many changes and separations of district boundaries, Long An province had 15 districts, towns and Tan An city until the merger of provinces and cities and the operation of a 2-level government.

Although the name Long An province appeared quite late compared to many other provinces and cities, Long An land has a long history. Archaeological discoveries show that since the 3rd century, Long An was one of the lands with the development of Oc Eo culture. In 1698, Nguyen Huu Canh obeyed the order of Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu to stabilize the situation, established Gia Dinh prefecture, including 2 districts: Phuoc Long and Tan Binh. Long An land today belongs to the old Tan Binh district.

In 1836, Minh Mang changed Phien An province to Gia Dinh province, calling the entire former Gia Dinh city Nam Ky. At this time, Gia Dinh province had 3 prefectures: Tan Binh, Tan An, Tay Ninh (which means including Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tay Ninh today). This was also one of the solid foundations for Long An province and Tay Ninh province to merge, establishing the new Tay Ninh province with the goal of sustainable development in the future.

Heroic Tradition

From the resistance war to the years of building and developing the homeland, the Party Committee, government and people of Long An have always clearly demonstrated the spirit of solidarity, "brave and steadfast". From the early days of fighting against French colonialism, Long An had brave heroes such as Trinh Quang Nghi, Phan Van Dat, Tra Quy Binh,... This land is also the homeland of many patriots and outstanding revolutionaries such as Nguyen Trung Truc, Nguyen Thong, Tran Van Giau, Nguyen Huu Tho,... Place names: Long Khot, Rach Kien, Queo Ba, Da Bien,... will forever go down in history and will be remembered by future generations.

In particular, Long An is also the province that owns most of the Dong Thap Muoi area, a place known as Viet Bac in the South. Dong Thap Muoi area of Long An is where the Southern Resistance Administrative Committee and the Southern Region Party Committee were located; where the Political Agency of Military Region 8 was established, which is also the base of Region 8; where the Kien Tuong Provincial Party Committee Base was located during the resistance war against American imperialism and where the 261st Giron Battalion was established;...

The land of Long An is “brave and resilient, the whole people fight the enemy” as the author Thach Phuong once wrote in Long An Gazetteer: “On this land of Long An, from the canal banks, the coconut groves, to the bamboo rows, the sugarcane fields, the aromatic gardens or the cajuput forests, every inch of land is soaked with the blood of our compatriots and comrades and hundreds of thousands of similar stories are told night after night without end, like the Arabian story of One Thousand and One Nights”.

No matter what name it is, Long An or Tay Ninh is still my hometown. Change towards the goal of development and better care for the people is something that needs to be supported."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham (Chau Thanh district)

After July 1, 2025, the place where I live will be Nhut Tao commune, Tay Ninh province. The names of the province, district and commune where I live have all changed completely, so I feel a little sad. But clearly this is a change for development, so we completely trust and support it, because "any homeland sky is the sky of the Fatherland".

Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Nu (Tan Tru district)

Up to now, when looking at the map of Long An province, I always imagine the image of a flying bird. Now that the province has been merged, looking at the new provincial map, I feel like the bird has gained wings. The fact that the province's name is no longer there actually still makes me feel a bit regretful, but it's okay, Tay Ninh or Long An, we are still Vietnamese people, Vietnam."

Mr. Huynh Huy Hoang (Tan An City)

Looking to the future

With such a heroic tradition of fighting against foreign invaders, the land and people of Long An are always gentle and simple, just like the name which means "Prosperous, full, good and peaceful, stable"!

The two rivers Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay of Long An enter poetry and music in a sweet, emotional way. Many people across the country know Long An through songs such as Vam Co Dong, Anh o dau song em cuoi song,... or vọng cổ songs: Dong song que em, Ben song Vam Co,...

This countryside is also one of the origins of the intangible cultural heritage of Don ca tai tu, as it is the birthplace of the late talented musician Cao Van Lau and the place where the musician Nguyen Quang Dai is worshiped. Long An has 5 national intangible cultural heritages, including many festivals imbued with humanity and tradition that have been preserved for hundreds of years, such as the Lam Chay Festival, the Ba Ngu Hanh Festival, the Great Festival of Tan Phuoc Tay Communal House, etc.

In the current period, Long An is also proud to be one of the provinces with the most developed industry in the Mekong Delta region. The growth rate of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in the area is estimated to increase by more than 8.3% in the first 6 months of 2025. This is the highest GRDP growth rate in the first 6 months of the year since 2021.

From July 1, 2025, Long An province officially ended its historical mission. The Party Committee, government and people of Long An now and will be Tay Ninh tomorrow, continuing to promote the tradition of solidarity and joining hands to build the homeland. The new Tay Ninh province on the foundation of Long An province and the current Tay Ninh province will continue to reach far in the journey of "transformation" of the whole nation. The place name Long An will forever be a memorable mark in the hearts of every Long An resident today and Tay Ninh in the future./.
