Lai Chau: Developing commodity agriculture to complete the goals of the new rural construction program

In recent years, Lai Chau province has actively promoted the transformation of agricultural crop structure towards concentrated commodities, creating value chains, thereby creating stable jobs and increasing income for people, contributing to the completion of the goals in the new rural construction program.

In order to effectively implement the above goals, right from the beginning of the term, Lai Chau province has issued many important policies to implement two key programs and one breakthrough task in agriculture according to the Resolution of the 14th Lai Chau Provincial Party Congress, term 2020-2025, notably Resolution No. 07/2021/NQ-HDND and Resolution No. 08/2021/NQ-HDND on developing concentrated commodity agriculture and sustainable forest development.

On that basis, Lai Chau focuses on investing in production area infrastructure, forming "4-house" linkage models, promoting the development of cooperatives and cooperative groups to improve production capacity and competitiveness of local agricultural products.

Large scale livestock farm model

Thanks to that, the province's agriculture, forestry and fishery sector has achieved an average growth rate of 5% per year. It is expected that by 2025, the total production value of the sector will reach 4,148 billion VND, of which crop cultivation accounts for 65.07%; livestock and aquaculture account for 24.3%; forestry 10.63%. For the crop cultivation sector, Lai Chau province aims to strongly transform the crop structure, with crops of high economic value, favorable for output consumption, such as tea, cinnamon, fruit trees, macadamia, high-quality rice... increasingly expanding in area.

It is estimated that by 2025, grain output will reach 226,000 tons; high-quality rice area will reach 3,954 hectares; tea 10,811 hectares; fruit trees 8,100 hectares; macadamia 7,420 hectares; cinnamon 13,000 hectares. In particular, the province focuses on developing large-scale rubber and medicinal material areas. There are currently nearly 13,000 hectares of rubber, of which nearly 12,000 hectares have been exploited, achieving an output of over 12,260 tons of latex/year. The medicinal plant area will reach more than 11,000 hectares, of which about 100 hectares are used to grow Lai Chau ginseng - a potential product with high value.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hoi, in Ho Ta village, Muong Khoa commune, Lai Chau, said: In the past few years, following the instructions of local authorities, our people have also actively switched from growing traditional food crops to growing flower crops, such as squash, cucumber, chili and high-quality tea.

Thanks to that, there is more steady employment, no longer depending on the season as before, and income has also increased for the people. The local government also supports connecting product consumption sources, so people do not need to worry about the output for the products they produce. Thanks to these factors, the lives of rural people in the area have also changed very positively."

In the livestock sector, Lai Chau province also focuses on developing concentrated farms with a scale of up to thousands of cattle and poultry/farm. From there, it organizes the application of high technology, disease control, and biosecurity. Up to now, the average livestock herd growth rate is over 5%/year, the output of fresh meat of all kinds reaches 95,300 tons, an increase of 36% compared to 2020. The whole province currently has 250 farm-scale livestock facilities.

In addition, in the field of aquaculture, Lai Chau province also has many positive changes. The aquaculture area has reached more than 1,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 18,176 tons, an increase of 43% compared to the previous period. The model of raising cold-water fish and cage fish on hydroelectric reservoirs is increasingly expanding, contributing positively to people's income and livelihoods.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Hanh, a trader specializing in importing agricultural products from Lai Chau to Hanoi, said: “We do business supplying agricultural products to wholesale markets in Hanoi, specializing in purchasing goods from Lai Chau. I think that the recent direction of restructuring crop and livestock production in Lai Chau province is very reasonable, because only by shifting to concentrated production can traders like us maintain a mutually beneficial connection to consume products. For the people, they have jobs and a stable source of income. From there, they can build a better life, with improved quality.”
