Sergio Ramos said goodbye to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a 1-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.

After the match, Ramos posted an emotional message on social media, expressing his gratitude and hinting that this could be his last time participating in a tournament as big as the Club World Cup.

“Personally, I am disappointed but satisfied with what I contributed to the team. Even more sad because this is probably the last time I participate in a Club World Cup, but it's over,” Ramos shared.

This sharing not only expressed regret but also made fans question the future of the 39-year-old center-back at the Mexican team. Ramos joined CF Monterrey in August 2024 as a free agent after leaving Sevilla.

At Monterrey, he quickly became a leader of the defense, making 28 appearances in Liga MX in the 2024/25 season, scoring three goals and helping the team to a third-place finish. Despite being unable to lead Monterrey past Dortmund in the FIFA Club World Cup, Ramos showed solidity and leadership, even scoring in the tournament when he went forward.

ESPN commented: “Ramos, even at 39, is still a top centre-back. His presence has brought stability to Monterrey, even though they could not go further at the Club World Cup.”

At Monterrey, Ramos signed a one-year contract with an option to extend until 2026, depending on performance and the wishes of both parties. However, he was given the captain’s armband at Monterrey and many other perks, such as additional revenue from the sale of shirts bearing his name, special security measures for his family and even the right to choose his matches.

Ramos' team failed to cause a surprise against Dortmund Dortmund won 2-1 against Monterrey on the morning of July 2, booking their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.
