The football world lost a star.
The world was shocked to hear that Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota died at the age of 28 in a traffic accident on July 3. It was heartbreaking when Jota passed away just ten days after he officially married Rute Cardoso. They had known each other since school and had three children together. He passed away after finishing a successful season with many titles: winning the 2024-2025 Premier League with Liverpool and winning the 2024-2025 Nations League with the Portuguese national team. In the UEFA Nations League arena, Portugal is the first team to have won the championship twice (the first time in the 2018-2019 season). Jota was present at both of those crowns.
The 2025 Nations League final (Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties on 8 June) was Jota's last game. He also won the FA Cup and League Cup with Liverpool.

Coach Jürgen Klopp added about Jota's value: "Modern football always needs an attacking star with defensive responsibilities. Jota never poses a problem when the coach wants him to both attack well and defend. He can do both easily, depending on the situation. That's why he is very valuable in the team's play and is trusted by his teammates." On the other hand, because he can easily switch roles depending on the situation, Jota becomes the "key" when the coach builds tactics. It is very difficult for the opponent to impose a tactical plan to neutralize Jota.
