According to the announcement from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club and 6 other teams are in the group with the best results in the 2024/25 season. These teams will be exempted from the preliminary round before the season.
specifically, the teams that will go straight to the group stage include Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Melbourne City (Australia), Suwon FC Women (Korea), Tokyo Verdy Beleza (Japan), defending champion Wuhan Jiangda Women (China), Bam Khatoon (Iran) and an unidentified club from the UAE.
This is the second consecutive time that Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club has participated in the highest level of Asian club competition. The achievement of reaching the quarter-finals last season helped the Vietnamese women's football representative avoid the preliminary round and have more opportunities to accumulate experience in the big arena.
Next season, the 2025/26 AFC Women's Club Championship will see a significant expansion with a total of 26 participating teams, an increase of 5 teams compared to the first season. Of these, 19 teams will compete in the preliminary round to compete for the remaining 5 spots in the group stage.
Notably, the 2025/26 season will see five countries send representatives to compete in the tournament for the first time, including Cambodia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Guam, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia. This shows the growing appeal of the playground for Asian women's clubs.
On the afternoon of July 3, the preliminary round draw took place. 19 teams were divided into 5 groups, including 4 groups of 4 teams and 1 group of 3 teams. The groups will compete centrally from August 23 to August 31, 2025. The 5 group winners will qualify for the group stage.
After determining all 12 teams, the AFC will hold the group stage draw in September. The tournament will officially kick off in November 2025.
Continuing to participate in this tournament shows the significant progress of Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club in particular and Vietnamese women's football in general in the journey to reach the regional level.
