On the morning of July 2, in Hanoi, General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense of Vietnam, received Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, Secretary of State for Defense of Italy, who came to pay a courtesy visit on the occasion of his visit to Vietnam to co-chair the 5th Vietnam-Italy Defense Policy Dialogue.
Expressing his gratitude to General Phan Van Giang for taking the time to welcome him, Italian Secretary of State for Defense Matteo Perego di Cremnago informed General Phan Van Giang of the successful results of the 5th Vietnam-Italy Defense Policy Dialogue that recently took place, thereby contributing to strengthening bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries and promoting the Vietnam-Italy Strategic Partnership.
On this occasion, Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago congratulated the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense on the success of the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024, and thanked the Italian Ministry of Defense for the thoughtful reception during their working time in Vietnam.
The Italian Secretary of State for Defense also congratulated Vietnam on officially operating a two-level local government from July 1, 2025; affirmed that Italy wishes to continue promoting defense cooperation with Vietnam so that the two sides can cooperate more effectively in the future.
Sharing at the reception, General Phan Van Giang expressed his joy at witnessing the relationship between the two countries being constantly nurtured, increasingly strong, deepened and comprehensively developed in all fields, from politics - diplomacy, economics - trade to culture, education, sports...
Emphasizing that Vietnam always attaches importance to the Strategic Partnership with Italy, General Phan Van Giang said that Italy is currently one of Vietnam's leading partners in the European Union (EU), and is also Italy's most important trade partner in ASEAN. The Vietnamese Minister of National Defense believes that with the political determination of the two countries' senior leaders, the relationship between Vietnam and Italy will develop increasingly well.
Highly appreciating the results of the 5th Vietnam - Italy Defense Policy Dialogue co-chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam and Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, Secretary of State for Defense of Italy, General Phan Van Giang acknowledged the positive results of defense cooperation between the two countries in recent times on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defense cooperation signed in 2013, notably in areas such as delegation exchanges and defense industry.
Realizing that there is still a lot of room for cooperation between the two sides, in the coming time, Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang suggested that the two sides increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level delegations; continue to promote cooperation in defense industry, training, and United Nations peacekeeping ; study and expand cooperation in areas such as overcoming the consequences of war, maritime security, military medicine, military culture and sports, and military cooperation...
Minister Phan Van Giang emphasized that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense will direct relevant agencies to effectively implement cooperation orientations based on the common perception of the two countries' senior leaders and the contents agreed upon at this Dialogue, in order to promote the Vietnam-Italy defense cooperation relationship to increasingly develop in an effective and practical direction, in line with the framework of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
