Previously, farmers in Phu Huu commune mainly grew oranges, guavas, and longans with low economic efficiency. After being instructed on organic durian growing techniques by Phu Huu Durian Cooperative, many households have boldly switched to growing Ri6, Musang King, and Monthong durian varieties. This conversion has brought in hundreds of millions of VND in income each year for households.
Mr. Nguyen Phi Thanh - a member of Phu Huu durian cooperative said that he has 6,000m2 of land, previously planted Thai longan, but the profit was not high. With the guidance of the cooperative on durian cultivation techniques, in 2020, he boldly converted the entire land area to grow Mongthong durian (120 trees). Up to now, the durian garden is more than 6 years old, bringing significant income to his family, with more than 1 ton of fruit/acre, the selling price of the off-season is about 80,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of over 300 million VND each year.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Thanh Lam, also a member of Phu Huu Durian Cooperative, boldly converted Thai longan to grow Ri6 durian. Thanks to applying technical advances and constantly learning, his 0.3ha durian garden (50 trees) yielded over 1 ton of fruit, selling for 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, earning several hundred million VND in profit each year.
Currently, Phu Huu durian has achieved 3-star OCOP product status, has been granted a growing area code with an area of about 200 hectares (7 codes), many businesses and traders trust and prioritize purchasing with stable prices.
Ms. Vo Thi Bach Le - Director of Huynh Lam Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, said that the company has cooperated with Phu Huu durian cooperative for the past 5 years to supply organic fertilizer and provide cultivation instructions. Realizing that Phu Huu durian quality meets standards, the company has cooperated to purchase and distribute to major supermarket systems nationwide such as: Winmart, Co.opmart, Big C, Annam Gourmet, Finelife. Ms. Le commented that the demand for durian as gifts, especially in the Central provinces and beyond, is very large. With an output of 100 tons/month, the company currently wants to expand its cooperation to spread out the crop, ensuring supply for the market all year round.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Dien - Director of Phu Huu Durian Cooperative, the Cooperative currently has 35 members, with a cultivation area of over 200 hectares, most of the members of the Cooperative produce organically and have stable output. In the coming time, the Cooperative will continue to expand the area of organic durian, VietGAP, to meet export requirements, and at the same time, move towards building the Phu Huu Durian brand, linking with consuming enterprises, helping members feel secure in production.
