Effective duck farming model on mesh floor

With outstanding advantages such as shorter rearing time, limited disease, reduced environmental efficiency, bringing higher economic efficiency compared to traditional rearing methods, the new breed of meat duck farming model on biosafety floors supporting product consumption linkage implemented by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is expected to be a new direction to develop livestock farming in a sustainable direction.

Effective duck farming model on mesh floor

The duck farming model on mesh floors of Mr. Tran The Anh in Trieu Commune is highly economically efficient.

The model was implemented at 3 locations: Cua Viet Commune, Vinh Dinh Commune and Trieu Co Commune. Using the new Grimaud duck breed with a quantity of 1,000 ducks/location. This is a meat duck breed bred and developed by the Grimaud Group (France), is considered a duck breed with a fast growth rate, short rearing time, high productivity and meat ratio, well adapted to the tropical climate conditions in Vietnam, so it is suitable for industrial and semi-industrial farming.

For the barn, instead of raising in the traditional way such as free-range farming, direct farming on the ground or in the lake, the model is carried out in the form of confinement on a composite plastic mesh floor about 40-50cm higher than the barn floor, the barn floor below has a slope for easy cleaning.

Holding a firm duck weighing more than 3kg ready to be sold, Mr. Tran The Anh, one of the household implementing the model in Trieu Co commune, said that he used to raise ducks in the traditional way. Although he cleaned them regularly, through monitoring, he found that managing from food to disease was very difficult. The flock of ducks often gets sick and cannot be controlled because the ducks graze freely and transmit diseases to each other, resulting in a high loss rate.

On the other hand, the livestock environment and surrounding areas are often polluted, emitting a foul odor due to duck manure being discharged directly into the ground and ponds. When participating in the model, he was engaged to make a cement floor for the barn, and the duck-raising floor was covered with a 1cm diameter net on a sturdy beam system 50cm higher than the barn floor.

Along with that, the Grimaud duck breed adapts quite well to local climate conditions, with a survival rate of over 98% and a fast growth rate. As a result, after 45 days of raising, the ducks reached an average weight of over 3.2 kg/duck. With a selling price at the barn of about 42,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he "pocketed" nearly 19 million VND.

In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will direct the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to continue to replicate this model to other localities; At the same time, support the building of long-term links between livestock farmers and businesses through long-term consumption contracts. Thereby contributes to increasing the value of local livestock products," Mr. Nguyen Phu Quoc added.

According to Mr. Tran The Anh, raising ducks in the traditional way on the ground makes ducks hot and prone to rotting belly feathers because they cannot be isolated from feces and waste, affecting the price when sold.

While raising ducks on mesh floors, although the initial investment cost is higher, the long-term effectiveness, the ducks' waste is easily flushed and collected into the treatment system, helping the farming environment to always be dry and clean, the ducks grow quickly, and the stocking density is also higher than when raised on the ground. The new Grimaud duck breed also has a superior growth time compared to other duck breeds raised before.

In particular, with this farming method, you only need to space each batch out about 15 days to thoroughly clean and disinfect the barn before you can restock. “This is a closed farming model that not only achieves higher productivity but also shortens farming time, minimizes management and care work,” Mr. He affirmed.

According to Duong Hong Phong, Deputy Head of the Trieu Phong-Dong Ha Agricultural Extension Station, the advantage of the model of raising ducks on mesh floors is that the ducks live in a dry, clean environment, helping the ducks grow better, thereby shortening the raising time.

Minimize the risk of disease transmission by limiting direct contact with wet ground and polluted environments, especially common infectious diseases caused by bacteria and parasites.

Through monitoring, the survival rate of ducks in the model reached nearly 96%, the average weight reached over 3.2kg/duck after 45 days of raising. After deducting costs, the model gave an average profit of nearly 19 million VND, 1.5 times higher than traditional farming on the same scale.

Grimaud meat duck breed also helps farmers shorten the raising time, thereby helping to rotate the breeding batches faster, being able to raise 4-5 batches/year. "Through evaluating the indicators, it shows that the duck flock has uniform appearance, meets the purchasing standards of the associated traders, thus ensuring product output and stable selling prices," said Mr. Wind.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Phu Quoc said that in recent years, poultry farming, especially duck farming, has developed in many localities. However, small-scale farming, lack of biosafety measures, use of unsecured breeds, and unstable product output have limited the economic efficiency and sustainable development potential of this industry.

Therefore, the successful implementation of the biosafety duck farming model on the floor has contributed positively to changing people's awareness and farming practices. From traditional, small-scale farming methods, farmers have gradually approached modern technical processes, ensuring disease safety, reducing dependence as when raising ducks in the field, improving production efficiency; manure and wastewater are collected centrally, limiting soil, water and air pollution compared to farming models combined with ponds, helping to limit the spread of diseases from the natural environment.

In particular, not only applying technical advances in breeds and biosafety farming methods, the model also supports linking product consumption, contributing to promoting commodity-oriented production, increasing value and stabilizing product output.
