Durian exports drop sharply, businesses compete to import massively
Durian – a specialty fruit and strength of Vietnam, which used to bring in billions of dollars each year – is now facing an unprecedented paradox. Although durian exports have been falling sharply for the past five months, businesses have suddenly spent heavily to import this fruit from Thailand and Malaysia.
In the first months of the year, the amount of durian imported into Vietnam increased dramatically. According to data from the Customs Department, in the first 4 months of the year, businesses and organizations spent nearly 9.3 million USD (equivalent to 236 billion VND) to import durian, an increase of 518% over the same period last year. The share of durian in the total amount of imported fruits and vegetables also increased from 0.24% to 1.17%.
Although Vietnam is a country with strengths in growing and exporting durian, it is not unusual for it to have to import large quantities. For example, even Thailand – the world's leading exporter of durian – or China – the world's leading producer of mangoes – still import these fruits to meet domestic consumption needs.
In 2024, Vietnam ranked second in the world in durian exports, after Thailand. The Chinese market accounts for 72% of Vietnam's total durian exports. However, in the first 5 months of 2025, the market situation changed very quickly.
According to the Customs Department, durian exports in the first five months of the year only reached 387 million USD, down nearly 58% compared to the same period last year. The proportion of durian in the group of exported fruits and vegetables also decreased sharply from 35% to 17%.
Notably, in May, export turnover continued to decrease, marking the fifth consecutive month of durian export decline – an unprecedented situation.
Notably, export turnover to China only reached 278 million USD in the first 5 months of the year, down 67% compared to the same period in 2024.
