Son La farmers benefit greatly from the OCOP program and replanting project
Son La is known as the largest Arabica coffee growing area in the North with more than 24,300 hectares of planting area, the output of coffee beans in 2025 is estimated at 37,724 tons, of which about 17,800 tons are exported with a value of nearly 70 million USD, an increase of 28.9% over the same period last year. The main export markets include the EU, North America, the Middle East and ASEAN.
The province aims that by 2025, the coffee industry will contribute 6-8% of the total export value of the crop sector, with an export output of over 25,000 tons of coffee beans, worth nearly 100 million USD. The proportion of fresh coffee beans processed industrially is expected to reach 30%, while deep processing will reach 5%.
Currently, Son La has 23,448 hectares of 4C and RA certified coffee, 543.7 hectares of organic coffee, 141 hectares of VietGAP and 36.8 hectares of growing area codes. The province maintains 5 coffee chains with a total area of 2,160 hectares, and has recognized two high-tech coffee growing areas in Chieng Mai and Muong Chanh communes with a total area of 1,039 hectares, attracting 1,560 households to participate.
In addition to developing raw material areas, Son La focuses on building brands and improving product quality. “Son La Coffee” has been granted geographical indications with 8 organizations having the right to use them. In the OCOP program, the province has 5 coffee products that have achieved 4 to 5 stars, notably Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative’s pure ground coffee (5 stars), Aratay Coffee, Minh Tri Arabica coffee, Bich Thao coffee husk tea and roasted coffee of Son La Coffee Company Limited (all achieving 4 stars).
The province currently has 28 enterprises and cooperatives operating in the field of coffee production and processing, of which 5 industrial processing facilities meet about 50% of the demand for fresh fruit processing. The units actively apply waste treatment technology and produce organic fertilizer from by-products, contributing to reducing pollution and increasing added value.
In parallel, Son La is implementing many projects to support replanting, improve seed quality and respond to climate change, notably the project "Building a model for replanting Arabica coffee" funded by GIZ (Germany). The project provides THA1 coffee seedlings, macadamia trees, microbial organic fertilizers and technical materials to support replanting and intercropping to increase economic efficiency.
Demonstration models of THA1 variety have shown positive results with high survival rate, good growth and excellent resistance to pests and diseases. At the same time, many training courses have helped farmers change their production mindset, focusing on applying techniques to produce coffee more effectively and sustainably.
With a synchronous development strategy and the active participation of the business community and cooperatives, Son La province is gradually raising the Arabica coffee brand on the world coffee map, creating a solid foundation for the long-term development of the local coffee industry.
