Vietnam spends 9.3 million USD importing durian despite being the "king of exports"
In recent months, Vietnam has spent nearly ten million USD to import durian, while exports of this item have continuously decreased for five months, an unprecedented phenomenon.
In 2024, Vietnam ranked second in the world in durian exports, after Thailand. However, in the first four months of this year, durian exports decreased, while imports increased six times compared to the same period last year.
According to data from the Customs Department, in the first four months of the year, Vietnam spent about 9.3 million USD to import durian, an increase of 518% over the same period last year. The proportion of durian in the total value of imported fruits and vegetables also increased significantly, from 0.24% to 1.17%.
According to statistics from the Customs Department, in the first 5 months of the year, durian export value only reached 387 million USD, down nearly 58% compared to the same period last year. The proportion of this item in the group of exported fruits and vegetables decreased from 35% to 17%.
Notably, durian exports continued to decline in May, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline. This caused the total export turnover of fruits and vegetables in the first five months of the year to reach only 2.3 billion USD, down 13.5% compared to the same period last year. The main reason is that China, which accounts for 72% of Vietnam's durian exports, has sharply reduced its imports of this item.
In the first 5 months of the year, Vietnam earned only 278 million USD from the Chinese market, down 67% compared to the same period in 2024.
In the coming time, Vietnam will strengthen the control of durian quality from production to processing and export, and closely coordinate with Chinese Customs to promptly handle arising issues related to food quality and safety.
