Durian export turnover drops suddenly, Vietnam has to import unprecedented amount
In just the first few months of the year, Vietnam spent nearly ten million USD to import durian, while exports of this item have continuously decreased for five consecutive months - an unprecedented situation.
In 2024, Vietnam ranked second in the world in exporting durian, after Thailand. However, in the first 4 months of this year, durian export output decreased sharply, while the import volume of this fruit increased 6 times compared to the same period last year.
According to data from the Customs Department, in the first four months of the year, Vietnam spent nearly 9.3 million USD to import durian, an increase of 518% over the same period last year. The share of durian in the total value of fruit and vegetable imports also increased from 0.24% to 1.17%.
According to the Customs Department, by the end of May, the country's durian export turnover only reached 387 million USD, down nearly 58% compared to the same period last year. The proportion of this item in the total export value of fruits and vegetables decreased from 35% to 17%.
In May alone, durian exports continued to decline, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline. This results in total fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first five months of the year reaching only 2.3 billion USD, down 13.5% compared to the same period last year. The main reason is that China - the market that accounts for 72% of Vietnam's durian exports - has sharply reduced imports of this item.
In the first 5 months of the year, Vietnam only earned 278 million USD from the Chinese market, down 67% compared to the same period in 2024.
In the coming time, Vietnam will strengthen measures to control durian quality throughout the chain from production, processing to export. At the same time, Vietnam will also closely coordinate with the Chinese Customs to promptly handle arising issues related to food quality and safety.
