Vietnam "lost painfully", durian exports to China decreased by 61.7%
According to data from Indonesia, in 2024, only about 27 tons of durian were exported to China out of a total output of nearly 2 million tons harvested. Notably, in the first 5 months of 2025, China has not recorded any durian shipments imported from Indonesia.
Previously, logistical and licensing issues have hampered exports. However, a new agreement that recognizes the role of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency in ensuring the safety of frozen durian products is expected to ease previous licensing hurdles.
Currently, Thailand remains the largest supplier of durian to the Chinese market. The report shows that in the first 5 months of the year, China imported more than 390,000 tons of durian with a total value of about 1.9 billion USD, of which Thailand accounted for the majority with 328,000 tons and a value of 1.6 billion USD, however, this figure decreased by 21.8% in volume and 23.9% in value compared to the same period last year.
The poor quality of early-season durians in southern Thailand has prompted Chinese importers to halt purchases, pushing prices below 100 baht per kilogram (about $3.07). Harvest in eastern Thailand is expected to end in late June, while unfavorable weather conditions and heavy rains have reduced the quality of the produce, prompting traders to turn to the south, where the new season is just beginning.
On the Vietnamese side, in the first 5 months of the year, durian exports to China reached more than 61,000 tons, equivalent to 254 million USD, a sharp decrease of 61.7% in volume and 61.6% in value compared to the same period last year.
It is forecasted that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports will recover in the second half of the year thanks to the efforts of businesses in meeting new market standards, especially the Chinese market, along with the strategy of diversifying export markets.
