Dong A Thanh Hoa Club has officially reached an agreement to invite coach Choi Won-kwon to become head coach, replacing Mr. Tomislav Steinbruckner, who has just left the coaching position after an unsatisfactory season.
The Korean strategist will officially debut this week, embarking on a rebuilding project with the goal of helping the Thanh team break through in the 2025/2026 V.League season.
This is a step that clearly shows the team's leadership's determination to innovate after a year of unstable performance.
The choice of coach Choi Won-kwon is considered a bold but potential move. Born in 1981, he is a familiar face in Asian football.
During his football career, Choi played as a defender and right midfielder, and played for the Korean U23 team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where the Korean U23 team reached the quarterfinals, marking a memorable milestone in East Asian football history.
At club level, he won the 2000 K.League championship, the 2001 Super Cup and reached the 2002 AFC Champions League final with FC Seoul, Jeju United and Daegu FC.
After hanging up his boots, Coach Choi quickly affirmed his coaching ability when he joined Daegu FC since 2016 as an assistant, before being trusted to take over as head coach at the end of 2022.
His coaching style is highly regarded for its tight defensive organization, high discipline, good reading of the game and team cohesion. His teams often play solidly, control the game well and demonstrate a strong mentality.
In Vietnam, Mr. Choi left a deep impression as an assistant to coach Kim Sang-sik of the Vietnam national team. In the 2024 ASEAN Cup campaign, he was in charge of key tactical tasks, opponent analysis and personnel advice for the coaching staff.
Many national players after the tournament mentioned Mr. Choi's "golden hand" in helping the team control the game, especially in the thrilling final match against Thailand.
The regional championship after nearly a decade of waiting was largely due to the sharp direction of him, who always quietly stood behind the spotlight.
Now, in Thanh Hoa, the Korean strategist is expected to continue to breathe new life into the team's playing style.
His direct presence in Thanh Hoa since July 10 shows his readiness and seriousness for the new challenge.
In the context of increasingly fierce competition in V.League and increasingly emphasized tactics, a young but experienced coach like Choi Won-kwon will be a valuable addition to the top football playground of Vietnam.
With the support from the board of directors and a rejuvenated squad, he can completely recreate a Thanh Hoa full of vitality and courage, something that fans here always expect.
