Vietnam "Swims Against the Current": Efforts to Meet New Market Standards

Currently, Thailand remains the largest supplier of durian to the Chinese market with its huge population. In the first 5 months of the year, China imported more than 390 thousand tons of durian, equivalent to a value of 1.9 billion USD, of which the majority was from Thailand with 328 thousand tons, worth about 1.6 billion USD. However, compared to the same period last year, the import volume and value from Thailand decreased by 21.8% and 23.9% respectively.

The poor quality of early-season durians in southern Thailand has prompted Chinese importers to suspend purchases, sending prices below 100 baht (about $3.07) per kilogram. The durian harvest in eastern Thailand was expected to end in late June. Unfavorable weather and heavy rainfall have caused the quality of durians to decline, prompting traders to turn to the south, where the new season has begun.

Meanwhile, Vietnam exported more than 61,000 tons of durian to China in the first five months of the year, with a total value of 254 million USD, down sharply by 61.7% in volume and 61.6% in value compared to the same period last year.

It is expected that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports will show signs of recovery in the second half of the year thanks to the efforts of businesses in meeting new market standards, especially China, as well as diversifying export markets.

In addition, the removal of technical barriers and new phytosanitary regulations issued by China will play a key role in restoring exports of durian and other fruits and vegetables to this market. Vietnam is focusing on granting growing area codes, approving packing facilities and simplifying inspection procedures to facilitate exports.

In addition to Vietnam and Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines also participate in exporting durian to China, however, the export volume from these two countries is still very limited.
