Frozen durian 'accelerates' into the billion-people market
According to data from the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the first 6 months of 2025, Vietnam exported about 5,217 batches of fresh durian with a total weight of nearly 130,000 tons. In particular, in the two months of May and June, the amount of fresh durian exported increased sharply, from more than 32,000 tons to 74,000 tons per month. This shows that the durian industry is showing signs of positive recovery, especially when the main harvest in the Central Highlands is expected to take place from August to October.
In terms of frozen durian exports, the first half of 2025 recorded remarkable growth with 388 shipments, reaching a total of 14,282 tons, an increase of more than 3 times over the same period last year. This development was achieved thanks to market expansion policies, notably the signing of the Protocol on frozen durian exports to China in August 2024. In addition, promoting deep processing and product diversification has helped reduce pressure on the fresh durian market, while creating more opportunities for businesses to expand exports.
In May 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture held a national conference to promote sustainable development of the durian industry, focusing on listening to and resolving difficulties for businesses, cooperatives and growers. The linkage model between growing areas, packaging facilities and exporting enterprises continues to be strengthened to improve product quality. At the same time, investment in processing and logistics is encouraged to increase added value for the industry.
After China tightened import controls, in May 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment sent a working group to Beijing to work directly with the General Administration of Customs of China. The result was the restoration of 829 growing area codes and 131 packaging facilities. In response to strict requirements on heavy metal residues, the Ministry directed laboratories to strengthen their cadmium and O-yellow testing capabilities. Currently, there are 24 cadmium testing laboratories and 14 O-yellow testing laboratories approved by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).
