Durian import turnover jumps to nearly 9.3 million USD
In Vietnam, the annual durian harvest reaches more than 1.5 million tons. However, the import turnover of this fruit has increased sharply, 6 times higher than the same period last year.
Vietnam is currently the second largest producer and exporter of durian in the world , after Thailand. In less than a decade, the country's durian industry has grown rapidly, with the planting area increasing from 32,000 hectares in 2015 to nearly 180,000 hectares in 2024, an increase of nearly 6 times.
With output exceeding 1.5 million tons by 2024, durian has become one of the fastest growing fruits in Vietnam. Export turnover of the "king of fruits" is also expected to reach more than 3.2 billion USD by 2024.
However, in the first 4 months of 2025, the durian industry faced difficulties with a sharp decline in output and export value, reaching only 130 million USD, much lower than the 500 million USD of the same period last year.
Durian prices also fell sharply compared to 2024. The main reason is that exports to the Chinese market are facing difficulties as Chinese customs tightened checks on cadmium and yellow O in durian.
In contrast to the export situation, durian imports into Vietnam have increased sharply. According to preliminary statistics from the Customs Department, in the first 4 months of this year, durian import turnover jumped to nearly 9.3 million USD, an increase of 518% over the same period last year, or about 6 times higher. The proportion of durian in the imported fruit and vegetable structure also increased from 0.24% in the first 4 months of 2024 to 1.17% this year.
