Accompanying people in disasters in areas

Timely social security support packages

Due to the steep mountainous terrain, sandy soil, and many rivers and streams, the northwestern region of the province often experiences flash floods, landslides, and rockfalls during heavy rains. In 2024, this area experienced 16 natural disasters, causing 11 casualties, nearly 900 houses damaged or collapsed, and many traffic routes and social welfare works were severely affected. In order to promptly accompany local authorities in implementing social security work and overcoming the consequences of storms, Plan Ha Giang launched the project "Accompanying people in areas", focusing on implementing support disaster packages to help people stabilize their lives soon.

During storm No. 3 in September 2024, Mr. Xin Van Hung's family in Di Thang village, Tan Tien commune lost their 6-month-old child and their 3-room stilt house swept away by the raging water. A week later, the rescue team found the child's body in a ravine more than 5km from their old house. The extreme pain leaves the couple speechless, because in a moment, they no longer had a house or child, only mud and tears. In that situation, the local government and neighbors took care of the family and helped them find temporary accommodation. Plan Ha Giang promptly supported the family with food, clean water tanks, essential household items, and 5 million VND in cash.

Mr. Xin Van Hung shared: “My family and 4 other households in the village had their houses swept away by the flash flood, leaving us penniless. The gifts from organizations and benefactors helped us overcome the initial difficulties. This was a great source of comfort, helping the family to ease the loss, feel that we were not left behind, and try to overcome adversity.”

From September 2024 to now, Plan Ha Giang has given cash to 200 households, each with 3.5 million VND to help people overcome immediate difficulties caused by natural disasters. In addition, 1,260 food packages, 1,450 clean water and personal hygiene kits, and 280 essential household items have been distributed. The total number of beneficiaries from the support packages is about 8,500 individuals, mainly women and children in vulnerable groups after natural disasters. Mr. Duong Van Tuy, Director of Plan Ha Giang, said: "We have worked directly with local authorities to make a list and review each household. The support packages do not stop at providing food or urgently; preventing and fighting epidemics but also aim to improve the community's ability to respond and recover after natural disasters."

Towards sustainable support for the community

Teacher Nguyen Hong Luong, Principal of the school, shared: "The completion of the anti-erosion embankment project not only helps ensure the safety of students and teachers during the rainy season but also creates conditions for the school to maintain stable teaching and learning. The timely support from Plan has given us the motivation to confidently commit to this land with many difficulties for a long time."

Not only stopping at emergency relief packages to help people stabilize their lives, Plan Ha Giang continues to implement sustainable solutions to enhance the long-term adaptability of the community. Many families who used to depend on slash-and-burn farming on sloping land have been consulted and supported to change their structure to growing trees combined with small-scale livestock farming models. Comrade Lu Van Chung, Secretary of the Ban May Commune Party Committee, said: "The local Party Committee and government highly appreciate Plan Ha Giang's support in social security work to help people overcome the difficult period before the damage caused by natural disasters. These practical actions are not only a motivation for households to confidently rise up to stabilize their lives but also spread the spirit of solidarity and mutual love in the community."

"In the coming time, Plan Ha Giang will continue to coordinate with localities to build safe communities that are flexible in adapting to climate change. Organizing communication and training at the groundswell level aims to improve the capacity and skills to respond to natural disasters for people, vulnerable groups. We expect that these actions will not only help people overcome natural disasters, but also gradually improve their ability to protect themselves in all circumstances," added Mr. Duong Van Tuy, Director of Plan Ha Giang.
