The prestigious magazine L'Équipe has named Novak Djokovic 'champion of champions', after winning three Grand Slams in 2023.

Djokovic won the L'Équipe award for the second time after 2021. He won with 876 points, surpassing French swimmer Leon Marchand (361 points) and Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen (348).

Only four men have ever won the award, according to L'Équipe. The three before Djokovic were Andre Agassi (1999), Roger Federer (2005, 2006, 2007) and Rafael Nadal (2010, 2013, 2019). Serena Williams has won the award three times, while Iga Swiatek won last year.

L'Équipe rates 2023 as an extraordinary season for Djokovic, as he wins seven of the 12 tournaments he plays, including three titles in four Grand Slam finals. Djokovic started the 2023 season by winning the Australian Open, then won Roland Garros, reached the Wimbledon final and won the US Open. He also added two Masters 1000 titles to his collection and the ATP Finals title.

2023 also marks Djokovic reaching 400 weeks as world number one, something no other player has achieved in history. Djokovic holds the Grand Slam record with 24 titles, two more than Rafael Nadal and four more than Roger Federer.

This is the fourth season in Djokovic's career that he has won three out of four Grand Slams. Many experts consider this the best season of the Serbian tennis player's career because he is 36 years old. Nole denies this, saying that 2015 was his peak season when he won 82 matches and won 11 titles, including three Grand Slams.

Djokovic has just played an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in Saudi Arabia, before heading to Australia for the United Cup – a warm-up event for the Australian Open. He will be the top seed at the first Grand Slam of the year, which starts on January 14.
