VnExpressVnExpress30/05/2023

France Novak Djokovic was booed by French fans for celebrating after winning a serve against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of Roland Garros.

After winning the first two sets 6-3, 6-2, Djokovic had a tough time against Kovacevic in the third set. Nole let the world number 114 win a serve game and level the score at 3-3. But in the next game, the world number two had a break point. After a series of long balls, Djokovic won an important point with a backhand winner.

The Serbian celebrated his win by raising his hands to his ears to listen to the crowd, then punching the air. Fans on Philippe Chatrier Center Court booed Nole. Eurosport said the reason was because he celebrated too much against an opponent ranked 112 places lower than him. From another perspective, the reputable news site assessed that the score celebration showed Djokovic respected his opponent and played to his full potential in the opening match, winning 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.

Djokovic celebrates winning the point in game 7 of the third set.

"He played really well, controlled his mentality and kept his form," Nole praised his American opponent after the match. "He won my decisive serve and took the third set to a tie-break. I always want to dominate every opponent, no matter the circumstances, but I can't always do that."

Another detail shows that Djokovic was not complacent in his opening match at Roland Garros. After easily winning the first two sets and winning the first return game of the third set, Nole held his serve and saved three break-points in a row. When the score was 40-40, Nole served dangerously into the T-corner, preventing his opponent from touching the ball with his racket. However, the referee did not record it as an ace, as the signal from electronic technology showed that the ball hit the net.

Djokovic was furious with the decision, telling the umpire: "Check the machine, it's unbelievable. This happened five times in the match." The umpire then upheld the decision, and Nole had to serve again amid boos from the audience.
