I have lived in the US for 40 years. Now I only have my notarized English birth certificate. My father lost his Vietnamese birth certificate. Can I apply for a Vietnamese passport?

According to the law, a birth certificate (original, in Vietnamese) is one of the documents required when applying for a Vietnamese passport.

If you have lost your Vietnamese birth certificate, you need to contact the issuing authority to request a copy of the birth certificate.

Pursuant to Clause 5, Article 4 of the 2014 Law on Civil Status, the agency managing the civil status database includes the civil status registration agency, the Ministry of Justice , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other agencies assigned authority according to the provisions of law.

Therefore, you need to contact the Ministry of Justice or the Department of Justice of the province or city where you were born to carry out the procedure to request a birth certificate extract.

Then, contact the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate in the US to receive specific instructions on the passport application process with existing documents.

They will provide information on whether any additional documentation is required and instructions on how to submit your application.
