Far-right party wins historic victory, Prime Minister Nehammer admits bitter defeat

According to preliminary results of the Austrian election announced late on September 29, the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) has won a historic victory.

Reuters news agency reported that according to preliminary vote counting results, the FPOe party won 28.8% of the votes, while the People's Party of Chancellor Karl Nehammer came in second with 26.3% of the votes.

This is the first time the FPOe has won a general election, although the party has previously been part of a coalition government .

However, the party is expected to have difficulty finding partners to form its coalition government.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Vienna, FPOe leader Herbert Kickl expressed his readiness to form a new government with "any party" in parliament, stressing: "We have made history. We have opened the door to a new era."

Meanwhile, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, who will oversee the process of forming a government, on the same day asked political parties to hold talks to form a government after the FPOe party won the general election.

In his speech, Mr. Bellen stated: "Now is the time for us to reach out, to talk to each other, to negotiate to find good and solid compromises."

Like other far-right parties in Europe, the FPOe has gradually built up voters' trust thanks to its stance on migration, inflation and restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, according to TASS news agency, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer admitted that his Austrian People's Party lost to the FPOe in the parliamentary election.

"Unfortunately, we were not the first to finish. But none of us should blame ourselves," the politician told supporters.
