Thanh Hoa officially appointed coach Choi Won-kwon to replace Tomislav Steinbruckner, who left the team after the 2024/25 season ended. The Thanh Hoa team hopes that the appearance of the Korean coach will help them transform in the 2025/26 V.League.
Last season, Thanh Hoa finished 8th with 31 points. The team had a period of decline after parting ways with coach Velizar Popov. In need of a breath of fresh air, the Thanh Hoa team's leadership promoted negotiations and successfully convinced coach Choi Won-kwon to return to Vietnam.
At the end of June, Thanh Hoa completed the recruitment of the Korean strategist. On July 10, Mr. Choi arrived in Thanh Hoa to start his new job.
Coach Choi Won-kwon, born in 1981, used to be assistant coach Kim Sang-sik of the Vietnam national team. At the ASEAN Cup 2024, he played an important role in tactical analysis, data collection and personnel consulting. His silent support contributed to helping the Vietnam national team play with confidence and win the championship.
Before moving into coaching, Coach Choi Won-kwon played for the Korean national team and the U23 team, leaving his mark at the 2004 Athens Olympics when he led the U23 team to the quarterfinals. He also spent nearly 15 years playing in the K.League for famous clubs such as FC Seoul, Gwangju Sangmu and Jeju United.
As a coach, he led Daegu FC and was highly regarded for his tight, disciplined playing style. Teams under Choi Won-kwon always stand out for their solid defense, cohesion and high fighting spirit. Experts consider Coach Choi a “defensive architect” who can turn a young team into a block of steel that is difficult to defeat.
