Should the '2 in 1' exam be maintained?

This is the first year of the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. The expectations of educational innovation opening up many opportunities for students to develop their own abilities have not been met as expected because of the way the exam questions were created.

After the exams ended, candidates were surprised at the difficulty of the math and English exams.

When the knowledge in textbooks is not enough to equip students to "cope" with exam questions, extra teaching and learning will become an inevitable need.

I think that to reduce the pressure of extra study, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to eliminate tricky questions in the high school graduation exam as well as not continue to maintain the 2-in-1 goal of using graduation exam results for university admission. Because to increase the differentiation in the exam, it is necessary to use questions with a high level of difficulty, sometimes the questions in the provincial-level excellent student exam lead to unfairness for candidates.

The 2025 high school graduation exam will reduce the number of subjects to two compulsory subjects and two elective subjects. That means candidates will have fewer options to register for their favorite majors. In addition, universities have "blossomed" admission combination options to create more opportunities for candidates but make candidates overwhelmed and not know which is the best choice.

It is time for the 2-in-1 exam to complete its "mission" to return the high school graduation exam to its proper role and function. That will help the 2018 GeneralEducation Program go on track and the graduation exam can assess the quality of education, helping students orient their future careers instead of regretting the "puzzling" exam questions.

The education sector needs to review the way of training that emphasizes scores, evaluating a child's success through knowing how to find the right answer, finding answers given by others but lacking the ability to ask questions for themselves.

Do the "super difficult" questions and "intellectual problems" in English or math exams open up any solutions for candidates in life or hurt the child because they think they are incompetent?

We do not demand leniency in assessment or in setting questions, but we need a balance between learning and testing.
