Writer Dao Quoc Vinh has 3 works included in the collection. textbook . That is Cross the road (pen name Thuan Khang) and Cardboard print in Vietnamese 5 , volume 1, still available Poinsettia print in Vietnamese 5 , volume 2, same series book Kite.
This is the joy of old age of a writer and teacher who has been attached to primary school students for many years, so he considers it a gift to the beloved young buds.
Simple lessons
He considers these three "short stories" that are familiar and necessary for children.
Cardboard is a story written from the memories of To Hien Thanh Primary School, Hanoi , where he was the principal. At that time, he campaigned for each class to have a few pots of plants and flowers to green the classroom corridor. The campaign was enthusiastically responded to by the children, but then a conflict arose, students of this class did not want students of other classes to see their class's pots of plants. Of course, the head teacher amicably arranged this small situation. The writer himself did not expect that this memory would become the material for him to write. Cardboard . It is also a story of conflict between students in different classes, but the children themselves will resolve the story without the intervention of adults.
Story Cross the road depicts the beautiful image of a traffic policewoman on her mission to keep life peaceful and a gentle reminder not to cross the street when the light is red.
Story Poinsettia written from the author's childhood memories of historical relics in his hometown, where he and his friends often played at Van Chi (similar to the Temple of Literature, but on a village scale), through which he wanted to talk about guiding children to respect and care for local relics, at the same time he also evoked the spirit of studiousness from the examples of those of doctoral level who were honored at Van Chi.
All three of these stories were created after writer Dao Quoc Vinh accepted an "order" from Professor Nguyen Minh Thuyet - Editor-in-Chief of the book. Vietnamese elementary school, Canh Dieu series. The reason for this "order" is because Professor Thuyet already knew about 2 children's poetry collections titled my dream I love my home and children's novels Eyes of the sky by Dao Quoc Vinh previously released.
The writer quickly processed the articles according to the editorial board's requirements to fit the book, but after sending them out, he anxiously waited for feedback every day. He said: "I'm not nervous because I'm afraid my work won't be published, but I'm afraid that if it doesn't meet the requirements, it will cause a loss of trust with those who have placed their hopes in me and waste their time."
When writers accompany teachers
While talking with writer Dao Quoc Vinh, a straightforward question was asked: There is an opinion that the works in the series book Vietnamese From grade 1 to grade 5, there is a heavy emphasis oneducation but a lack of literary language. What do you think?
He stated his opinion: "This statement is only partially correct, with a few works that are not of the right quality, but not completely correct. Because the teaching criteria Vietnamese In primary school, it is 70% vocabulary and 30% literature, and middle school only starts to have this subject. Literature In primary school, it is 50% language and 50% literature, and in high school, it is 30% language and 70% literature. Therefore, in primary school, there should still be clear, easy-to-understand lessons about Vietnamese, accompanied by gentle educational stories.
This is also Dao Quoc Vinh's point of view when writing for children, in both prose and poetry, so readers can easily recognize the educational lessons about personality, about beautiful lifestyle... in his writings.
During his 20 years as principal of To Hien Thanh Primary School, Dao Quoc Vinh said that interacting with children gave him the energy and ability to write poetry and literature for children. But this did not come easily right away, because before that he had only written for adults.
Writing for children came to him when he had the idea of writing a book of poems to give to students at To Hien Thanh Primary School. That inspiration came because every day he noticed the cuteness and beauty in the faces and laughter of the students. Carefully, he observed them more closely, paying attention to their language to "learn" everything from them.
However, Dao Quoc Vinh himself admitted that his first collection of children's poems My dream not very successful, although there were some pieces that were popular with students. Later works such as I love my home and Eyes of the sky more warmly received.
Regarding the transition from children's poetry to prose, he explained that he had too many stories to write, which the framework of poems could not carry.
Novel collection Eyes of the sky was born is an example, telling the story of the childhood of the boy Khang - also the character who reflects the author's childhood - born in peace in 1954, but a few years later had to live in war. The life of children in the North during the war is shown through the pages of the book and there is the determination of each person, the memories and feelings of teachers and students, neighbors...
He shared: "Each person's poetry is their own fingerprint, so even though I say I write for the students of my school, there are still traces of my childhood and my children's childhood in it... I like to write about my childhood so that my wife and children know that I lived in a time like that."
Write quickly, because time is running out.
Writing is a joy for Dao Quoc Vinh, and even more joyful is that both his son and daughter-in-law are writers of poetry and literature. When asked if his children have prolonged his literary joy, because there is continuity, the writer laughed out loud: "Actually, I continue my children. Dao Quoc Minh - my son - became a member of the Vietnam Writers Association before me."
"I directed my son to study natural sciences, but he was still very good at literature. After an accident, Minh turned to literature and was quickly recognized. It was my son who rekindled my childhood love of literature and I started writing, then followed him to the Vietnam Writers Association."
It was literature that chose him and his father, because they actively avoided it, but in the end they still stuck to the writing profession. Dao Quoc Vinh said that he loved poetry since he was a child, still remembering very clearly how he trembled when holding newspapers that published poems by poet Tran Dang Khoa - secretly thinking that someone a few years younger than him could write such good poetry. He cherished and practiced writing, but then other busyness kept him away, and it was 40 years later that he officially started writing again.
The writer admitted: "Fate is really unexpected, I went around and around and finally came to poetry and literature, it's good that I came late, because after all the experiences and maturity of age and no longer being busy with food and clothing, my writing is calmer."
Currently, Dao Quoc Vinh is writing a children's novel about children with mental disabilities. He said this is a debt to the children that he needs to complete this year or the first half of next year.
To Hien Thanh Primary School, which he founded and has been associated with for 20 years, always has special classes for disabled students, so he knows many heartbreaking and touching stories behind these children...
In addition, he also outlined an adult novel to "assign tasks" to make his retirement more busy.
The writer confided: "I am over 70 years old, and I don't know when will be the last day of my life. I don't have much time left, so I have to write and write quickly what is tormenting my heart."
