Journalism wants to go far, it must come close
According to Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung, digital technology has the first and strongest impact on the field of journalism and communications and has created fundamental changes in this field.
According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, cyberspace is now the main battlefield, the main battle of the press. The fourth industrial revolution, digital technology, digital transformation have been going on for more than ten years, now it is not only about going to cyberspace but also about reclaiming cyberspace, creating the mainstream in cyberspace. In addition, the main source of revenue for the press will also come from cyberspace. Therefore, if the change is successful, the future of the press and media will be above the extension line, otherwise it will be below this extension line.
Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that digital technology takes away some old jobs but also creates new ones. “So the press has to do new things. Innovation in journalism lies in the fact that the press has to do more than what it is doing. The press needs a wider space than “Who, what, when and where”, comrade Nguyen Manh Hung analyzed. Because nowadays, readers want to know what is behind the news. It can be an interpretation, analysis or commentary on the news. It can also be a multi-dimensional view, a deep and intelligent understanding, an interesting and suggestive interpretation, or a solution to the country's problems.
“Innovation is not a difficult thing. Innovation is finding an easier way to do something more difficult. That new way often comes from a different perspective, a different approach. At the beginning of a new industrial revolution, the new way is often to do the opposite. Use digital technology to do the opposite. Instead of writing, create a platform for people to write. Instead of letting people read on your website, let them read on different platforms. Instead of providing information, provide knowledge. Instead of doing it yourself, cooperate. Instead of letting reporters process a lot of information, let them process things with very little information and let AI process a lot of information. Instead of avoiding accidents, control accidents,” Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung suggested.
Comrade Nguyen Manh Hung expressed that if the press wants to develop, it needs new space, new production forces, new production resources, new production factors and new motivation. The new space is digital space. The new production force is digital technology. The new production resources are digital human resources. The new production factor is digital data. The new motivation is digital innovation. Therefore, investing in digital technology, digital human resources, digital data and digital innovation will be investing in the future of the press.
“The recent difficulties and problems of the press do not diminish the role of the press, as some people think, but only show that the press needs to innovate,” Minister Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed. Accordingly, if it does not change, it will be replaced. Digital technology, the Internet and social media are strong impetus to innovate the press. If you want to go far, you must come near. If the press wants to innovate, it must find and maintain the core values and original mission of revolutionary journalism.
