Steadfast in the sea
DK1 Battalion was established on July 5, 1989, in the context of the complicated situation at sea, islands and continental shelf in the South. Assigned the task of directly managing and protecting the area of special strategic significance in terms of politics , economy, national defense and security, the Battalion gradually affirmed its role as the core force of the Vietnam People's Navy in the task of protecting sovereignty over the sea and continental shelf in the South.
From the very first days of taking over and guarding the platforms, officers and soldiers of Battalion DK1 had to face many difficulties and challenges: harsh weather conditions, strong winds and waves, lack of facilities, threats and provocations from foreign forces. However, with a courageous spirit and determination, they steadfastly held their ground, excellently completing their assigned tasks, firmly protecting each platform, each " sovereignty marker" at sea.
During the process of building and protecting sovereignty, 20 platforms were built on 7 shoals: Tu Chinh, Phuc Nguyen, Phuc Tan, Huyen Tran, Que Duong, Ba Ke, Ca Mau . This is an area with harsh climate and hydrological conditions, frequent occurrence of tropical depressions and strong storms. Many big storms with waves 13-15 meters high caused severe destruction, causing 05 platforms to collapse, 9 platform officers and soldiers and 2 comrades on the ship to heroically sacrifice themselves at a very young age.
And during that journey, many DK1 officers and soldiers had to face life-and-death moments: drifting at sea for dozens of hours after the platform was destroyed; struggling with the sun, rain, wind and waves; living for long days in conditions lacking green vegetables, fresh water, and limited facilities... But it was in the most difficult circumstances that the spirit of the soldiers on the platform shone even brighter. The will, courage, belief and spirit of "as long as there are people, there will be platforms" became an order from the heart, forging the noble qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers - Navy soldiers" at the forefront of the waves and winds.
Major Le Van Sy, Commander of DK1/9 Platform, in his speech before the Congress of Party Delegates of Region 2, promised: “In any circumstances, we will be absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland and the People, ready to fight and sacrifice to firmly protect the sovereignty of the assigned sea areas; be a solid support for fishermen to go offshore, stick to the sea and brighten the image of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers - Navy soldiers” in the new era”.
Maintain the position, stick with the fishermen
From the first 3 platforms in 1989, up to now, Battalion DK1 has had 15 platforms upgraded and solidified. Officers and soldiers strictly maintain the 24/7 watch regime, detect, monitor, and promptly report hundreds of thousands of targets at sea and in the air. Closely coordinate with other forces, creating a solid, interconnected defense posture, resolutely fighting against all plots and actions that violate sovereignty.
In addition to their political and military duties, DK1 officers and soldiers are also a reliable support for fishermen going out to sea and sticking to the sea. They are always proactive in helping fishing boats in distress, rescuing fishermen in trouble, providing fresh water, food, and medicine, creating trust and solidarity between the military and civilians at sea.
In the past time, soldiers from the platforms have coordinated to rescue 9 fishing boats in distress, provided emergency treatment to hundreds of fishermen, and supported more than 650 fishing boats with fresh water, fuel, and food. In the first 6 months of 2025 alone, 8 fishing boats were supported, contributing to the widespread dissemination of the program "Vietnam Navy as a support for fishermen to go offshore and stick to the sea".
In recognition of its outstanding contributions, on December 21, 2005, Battalion DK1 was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State. In addition, the unit was also awarded the Third Class Feat of Arms Medal, the Second Class Fatherland Protection Medal (twice) and many other noble awards.
These feats and achievements are the sweat, blood, political courage, solidarity, and iron will of many generations of DK1 officers and soldiers. At the same time, they are the result of the attention and facilitation of the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense, the Navy Command, and directly the Party Committee and the Navy Region 2 Command, along with the companionship and sharing of the people of the whole country.
Entering a new stage of development, the task of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and continental shelf in the South is increasingly difficult and complicated. Based on the thorough understanding of the Resolution of the Congress for the 2025-2030 term at all levels, Battalion DK1 has determined the key directions as follows: Building a clean, strong, and exemplary Party organization; improving the leadership capacity and fighting strength of Party committees and organizations; focusing on improving the quality of training, combat readiness, and mastery of weapons and equipment; focusing on building a contingent of cadres and soldiers with steadfast political will, pure moral qualities, strict discipline, ready to receive and successfully complete all assigned tasks.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Duc, Party Secretary and Political Commissar of Battalion DK1, said: “In the new development stage, officers and soldiers of Battalion DK1 are determined to build a strong and comprehensive unit that is “exemplary and typical”; the “regular and exemplary” platforms, following the heroic tradition, are worthy of being a steel fortress firmly protecting the sovereignty of the sea, islands and southern continental shelf of the Fatherland.”
After 36 years of building, fighting and growing, Battalion DK1 has been affirming its role as the core force, directly protecting the sovereignty of the sacred sea and continental shelf of the Fatherland. Promoting that tradition, the officers and soldiers of the entire Battalion will continue to be a reliable support on the front line, contributing to maintaining sovereignty and a peaceful and stable environment at sea.
In particular, along with the spirit of the historic July days, along with the country's transformation and welcoming the important political event of the entire Navy. The officers and soldiers of DK1 platform uphold their sense of responsibility, strong will, overcome all difficulties and hardships at the forefront, determined to achieve many outstanding achievements in training, combat readiness, firmly protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland - are the fresh, practical flowers to welcome the 14th Congress of the Navy Party Committee, term 2025 - 2030.
