Back to school season is not lonely
Despite being busy, Ms. Phan Thi Kim Phuong, Secretary of the Hoan Lao Commune Youth Union, and other “foster brothers and sisters” still regularly call to inquire about and encourage Hoang Le Linh Nhi (born in 2016), residing in Ray village. Before the new school year, worried that Nhi would lack books and school supplies, Ms. Phuong and the commune union officials went to her house to support her.
Holding the gift, the orphan girl’s eyes welled up with tears. “My mother passed away early. My family is very poor. Thanks to the support of the union members and youth, my three children’s lives have become less difficult. This school year, I am less worried,” Nhi confided.
When Linh Nhi was 3 years old, her mother passed away from cancer. After a series of days of treating her mother's illness, Nhi's family's finances were almost exhausted. Amidst the many difficulties, the presence of union members and young people was like a warm ray of sunshine shining into her life. Knowing about Nhi's situation, in 2022, local union officials agreed to sponsor her.
Not only providing regular financial support, the foster brothers and sisters also regularly visit, encourage and help Linh Nhi. “Before, Nhi was a little girl who rarely smiled and was very shy. Now, her face is brighter. Nhi is also much more confident. We will sponsor her until she is 18 years old,” said Ms. Kim Phuong.
In Vinh Dinh commune, for many days now, the "foster brothers and sisters" have been actively organizing activities to support their 15 "foster children". Most of them are orphans, in especially difficult circumstances, and at risk of dropping out of school. "The school year is the time when children are most vulnerable. Understanding that, we focus on organizing practical support activities to help them have more motivation", said Secretary of the Youth Union of Vinh Dinh commune Vo Thi Ngoc Diep.
As a low-lying commune, Vinh Dinh often faces natural disasters and storms and floods. The life of the people here is closely linked to their fields and their worries. When the program "Foster children of the Union" was implemented, the people were very happy and silently thanked the union members and young people. In order not to disappoint the people, in addition to promoting internal resources, the union officials of Vinh Dinh commune focused on mobilizing support from businesses, organizations and kind-hearted individuals.
“Whenever we hear about a child’s difficult situation, we will go there to find out, write articles and mobilize funds through many channels. Thanks to that, many of the commune’s “adopted children” have received financial support. Among the benefactors, some are children of Vinh Dinh who are far from home. Although they have a hard time making a living in the big city, they still save money every month and every quarter to send money back home,” Ms. Diep said.
Join hands to spread love
According to Mr. Dinh Trung Hieu, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, there are currently about 240 thousand team members and children in the area. Despite receiving attention from relevant levels, sectors, units and charitable organizations and individuals, a number of team members and children still face difficulties in studying and living.
Most of the children are orphans, often sick, living in remote areas... "To practically support the children, in recent times, the Youth Union at all levels has taken many specific actions. Among them, the model "Foster Children of the Union" is highly appreciated for its effectiveness and profound humanitarian meaning," Mr. Hieu affirmed.
“Germinated” from the grassroots, the “Foster Children of the Union” model quickly expanded into a large program, throughout the country in general and Quang Tri in particular. Up to now, hundreds of children have been adopted as “foster children” by the Youth Union in the province.
Not only do they provide monthly, quarterly or annual financial support, union officials, union members and youths also regularly visit, encourage and help the children. Especially during the school year and holidays, the concern of the “foster brothers and sisters” is even more evident. Thanks to that, many “foster children” have found their smiles again.
These results have become the motivation for the provincial Youth Union chapters to make more efforts and maximize the effectiveness of the “Foster Children of the Union” model. However, in reality, if we only rely on the resources of the Union, supporting the “foster children” will hardly achieve the expected results. Meanwhile, the number of children in difficult circumstances who need support is still large. Therefore, the cooperation of charitable organizations and individuals is very necessary.
Realizing this reality, after the merger of the province, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee paid great attention to maintaining and developing the model of “Foster children of the Union”. Many activities to support disadvantaged students, including “foster children”, were organized.
Currently, the Youth Union at all levels is actively mobilizing resources to help children have a joyful school year. “In addition to promoting internal resources, we hope to receive the attention and support of organizations and individuals with kind hearts. The Youth Union at all levels is always ready to act as a bridge between sponsors and “adopted children” to multiply love and light up smiles,” said Mr. Dinh Trung Hieu.
